Testiclides: What's your opinion on Game Achievements on GOG?

Do you like them? Don't care? Hate them?
I have no problem with them being there, but I don't need them and I have therefore also no problem, if they are missing in the games that we get on GOG.
Technically I'm neutral with slightly leaning into derision; I do understand the idea behind achievements, but I do feel by and large, many of them are completely pointless metrics disguised as advancements, or they're joystick wagging contests over very pointless feats, such as "stick your fingers in the plug 100 times and get our ring of electrical resistance. (two ohms.)"
I like them if they do not require galaxy; I do not like them if they do require galaxy.

For the former, I attempt to 100% them only for games I really love and only if they don't require mindless grinding. Otherwise, I just go for low hanging fruit.
In-game = master game design, timeless, bonus points if doing them actually grants roguelite-like bonuses. Because it takes a lot more effort and skill to hardcode it into the game, the achievements feature will outlive clients centuries into the future, and the roguelite-like bonuses enhances the gameplay.

Kingdom Rush original is the best example of this since doing all these difficult missions to get stars on that level grants you more points to buff up your units and skills.

Client and/or telemetry = absolutely no way.
I can take them or leave them, but in the end I will happily have a game here with no Achievements then not having the game at all.
Thank you for the replies everyone! :)

AB2012: I used to be neutral towards them until they became the #1 reason behind ongoing degradation of offline installers, ie, GOG want Galaxy achievements but developers made it clear they don't want to recode SteamWorks achievements into Galaxy Achievements for every store, so GOG had the "Great Idea (tm)" of simply selling Steam games with SteamWorks achievements & API intact, inside a buggy as hell Galaxy 'ghost wrapper' (glorified Steam emulator crack) to translate Steam achievements into Galaxy ones on the fly, stamp a GOG logo on top and pretend it's a "GOG" release... The end result is we now have "GOG" games that require Steam cracks to startup normally without the "offline installers now hang an extra +15s on startup waiting for a fake Galaxy emulator wrapper to talk to a fake Steam emulator running inside that wrapper" delay (vs the clean & client-less builds we used to get) and this whole absurdly convoluted 'barely DRM-Free' mess is solely due to "Galaxy achievements on the cheap"...
Damn, this sounds wild. But I'm not surprised to be honest. I remember my friend telling me many years ago that he has some doubts about GOG being legal after purchasing A New Beginning game. It contained a bunch of Steam DLL files so he thought that games this store provides are just cracked Steam games.

Testiclides: For me, that would still be the poor compression and slow install speeds. Offline installers are most times the same size as the installed game. I have about 100 offline installers on a 1TB HDD. If they hypothetically managed to reduce offline installer size by 20% on average, I could fit around 20 more games on that HDD. That's a lot at the end of the day, and storage isn't cheap.

If some pirate running his compression setup on his mother's attic can get a much better compression ratio, it disappoints me that a proper company like GOG can't.
Many games have already very high compression files, I have a bunch of games from Epic and since they do not provide a installer I just 7zip them and not every game compress, like Batmans and Tomb Raiders after the reboot. I assume said games decompress assets on-the-fly, if that's a good or a bad thing may depend on the game and accepted loading times.

Compressing the installers even further will slow down the installation process, unless they change for a more efficient encoder, wich to be honest is not a bad idea. If I correctly remember, GOG installers are single threaded but don't quote me on that.

That said, at this moment I'd rather GOG don't touch the installers setup at all.
I despise all achievements and wish they were never invented.
Vapid, pretend content that I have no interest in.

Wait, wasn't the +15s thing just a configuration error?
I think GOG said (maybe on Discord?) that they fixed various titles affected

A mod responded in that thread saying they added a new configuration timeout option for the newest version of the wrapper. So it's fixed it for late 2023-2024 games which are new enough to have a GalaxyConfig.json file to be able to edit. Problem is people have been complaining about this bugged wrapper since at least 2018 and to fix all those 5 years worth of 2018-2023 games using older versions of the wrapper, they'll have to go back and recompile each game for a newer version of the wrapper, which they still haven't done. So dozens if not hundreds of 2018-2023 releases are still bugged...

From what I've read, the default compression setup they use is a mess in all aspects. Essentially non existent compression (installers are the same size as the games), they are compressed multiple times which is useless, the decompression is singlethreaded, and is set to always decompress on the temp folder of the C: drive, even if you are installing on another drive, which means a game might not install if you dont have space on your C drive, even if you do have it on your other drive. Not to mention the extra wear on the drives.

Testiclides: But I do like the slight sense of accomplishment I get from obtaining them randomly throughout a playthrough. In some sense, I feel like it kind of adds to the legitimacy of the games I purchase on GOG. There's proof I was here, and I played that game, and got X amount of trophies on it.
This is why I like achievements. From just a psychological level, they're recognition for your efforts. I don't need them to enjoy a game but I like them.

They are like testicles: I know they are there, but I don't really keep thinking about them or stare at them.

I guess I could even live without them fine.
