Why fight the horde when you can be the horde! I'm really not into zombies but I really did enjoy Zombie Night Terror. It plays a lot like the classic Lemmings games where you are commanding stupid (or literally braindead) and mostly frail creatures to do things to solve puzzle scenarios.
+1 for Zombie Night Terror.

Death Road to Canada is also simple, silly and extremely fun.

Leroux: Plants vs. Zombies! *ducks*

This might actually be true though, as I'm not really a fan of zombie survival games, and zombies are my least favorite type of undead or opponents in general. Just gross and boring.
+1
I really liked this one, a kind of RTS zombie game. MarZ:Tactical Base Defense.

Inexorable hordes approaching your base, limited time, restricted manpower and entertaining weapon upgrade solutions as well as interesting apocalyptic weapon solutions. The harder difficulty is exceptionally good, where one zombie that touches your base fails the outcome- exactly what a zombie game should do!

I don't do it justice though, try the demo it is still available here on gog.

I really like zombie games, it doesn't get old for me.

Zombie Night Terror has to be my favourite though. It's such a cool and fun way to use zombies.

I also like the Zombie Army and Zombie Shooter games. Uncomplicated fun.

To me a zombie game is most fun when it's a bit silly.
There's only one Zombie game worth dealing with, and it was made by LucasArts.

Zombies Ate My Neighbours.

Dying Light, maybe... Silly plot but fun zombo-masher with some excellent first-person parkour gameplay. :)

Honorable mentions:
Zombie Night Terror - Fun little Lemmings clone thing
Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadville - There are quite a few pseudo-community building zombie games, but in terms of managing said communities this one's definitely my favorite.

So far, Days Gone is my favorite by a mile.

Excellent combat system, enemy AI is great, traversal on bike is fun, large variety of enemies, and a game where you can actually encounter and feel the power of a large horde.

It got panned by critics who didnt give it a fair shot but is a really underrated gem I recommend anyone with an interest in zombie games to play.

I do also enjoy RE4 for just how revolutionary and fun the game is but Im not a fan of tank controls. Playing on the wii made targeting easy and really allowed you to do cool things like shoot weapons in the air and target specific enemy points which is appreciated.
Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel without a Pulse. Closely followed by the original Plants vs Zombies.
Well who could resist the charming cemetery dwellers from Ghosts´n´Goblins?

Don't forget Ghoul Patrol !
1. Dead Rising
2. State of Decay
3. Dead Island
Hmm, it turns out I'm a complete ignoramus in this area. I haven't even heard of many of the games you describe here. Well, there is an opportunity to catch up. Thanks so much for sharing. I was especially interested in the game Nocturne and the Dead Island.
Typing of the Dead.
The best representation of zombies in a game, for me, is in Zombi, the Ubisoft game that originally was a Wii U exclusive called Zombi U and then got ported to PC without the U in the title. That game isn't perfect by any stretch, but they nail the George Romero style zombies to a T. It doesn't get better than that.
