I was thinking about that yesterday and though In sharing this with this community.

Super Mario (The first one, with the brown mario. lol)

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask

Monster Hunter (The very first one for PS2)

I'm thinking I could make the case for the list being empty. That is, trying to declare a specific game as "best" ends up having to neglect many very good games.

In any case, a couple of my favorites are Final Fantasy 5 and SaGa 1.

Yup. It's hard. That's why I was thinking in a list of gems that we actually played in our time back then, or nowdays, etc.
There are some really old (or new, who knows?) gems that we can't even imagine.
There's also many great games that didn't influence the industry, like The Magic of Scheherezade.

Also, some bad games that did influence the industry.

What are yours?
To me, you're kind of talking about two different things at the beginning there. Some of my favorite games didn't really influence the gaming industry at all, and I could honestly care less if I really like them. Night in the Woods, Alpha Protocol, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines or Blade Runner didn't have much of an influence on gaming as a whole but they're still some of my personal favorites, for example. And some like original Doom or the original Mario did and are also all-time favs of mine that I like to go back to, still.
