Is it Yendorian Tales Book I: Chapter 2?
That would explain why it looked familiar, a friend of mine begged me to find pirated copies of those games many years ago because he loved the first one so much.

Correct!
It was a shareware release, and the 'abandonware' sites all had the shareware version, finished it a few times, sadly, never got around to get the full version.
