Just finished The Hope We Seek.

AnimalMother117: Tons of people where I live adore the entire series, kind of a turn off, honestly. And then there are guys who kind of troll for it against classic literature and fantasy. Although, maybe it'd be worth it to see Sean Bean die again (nothing against the man, I think he dies well).

F1ach: Then you will love the movie Black Death, he dies real good in that :)
I'll check it out.
While finishing my latest (S.King's) novel, and that should take a while, here's a list of the short fiction I've read during the latest years/months. Yes, it's fucking god-tier, read'em all and you can thank me later by sending moneyz'n shit....

LinustheBold: I just finished the second volume of Game of Thrones (Clash of Kings). I tried reading the series a couple of years ago, and hated it - HATED it - for the endless pointless violence, the voluminous nattering on about armor that could never exist, the hateful gratuitous rape scenes, and in general everything about the novel that does not advance the story - which is about two-thirds of what's in it.

And then, just as I was putting it all down in peace as something I'd bought with best intentions and would never finish, everyone in the whole world started reading and watching it (I can't abide the HBO series either, made it through 1.5 episodes and decided life is too short).

So I decided I'd give it another stab (ha, stab). It's much easier the second time through. The story is really very good, and now that I'm used to what I dislike about the writing it doesn't hurt as much. I really wish it were shorter and a little less, well, television-writery, but Martin is a television writer, so it is what it is.

With some trepidation, I'll move on to the third now.
Want to talk endless nattering on and padding? Read The Wheel of Time. I kept reading for some reason but there are literally whole pages that talk about details on clothing. 1000 page novels that can be effectively synopsized (is that a word? :)) in a paragraph or two...just something wrong with that.

Wheel of Time, eh? I know of the series, though I've never read it. Did you read all fourteen books?

losms: Starship Troopers - Robert A. Heinlein
Starship Troopers is pretty good and gives you insight into how modern mecha works (at least how it got started), more importantly, it's good Sci-Fi by one of the most prolific men in the genre.
Started Cormack McCarthy's "All the Pretty Horses" a couple weeks back. May have to restart since my reading time has been really fractured lately.

I stopped after number 11 (Knife of Dreams I think?) the last one Robert Jordan wrote. The last three were written by someone else using his notes. I'll get to them eventually I guess, but somewhere around book 7 I just kept reading because I'd invested so much time in them. Began to be less about enjoying and more about enduring them.

Same story here. Must get back to reading through them all again. These books are huge and entire books in some cases can be filler. It's quite ludicrous at times. Don't even bitch about Martin if you've read Jordan.

And its a shame, too, because there are some great characters and probably about 5 or 6 good books in those 14 books! :)

Speaking of the someone else, anyone read the Mistborn books, or any of his others for that matter?

Mistborn books are very good fantasy books. Recommend them. Its not quite what you expect at the end of book 3. Won't spoil the story :)

At the moment im reading The Emperor's Edge Collection by Lindsay Buroker. This a kind of Steampunk novel in the world of Steam machines, alien ships and magic which is called mental science in the book. Very enterntaining book. Its actually an Omnibus of first three books together in a series of seven books. For anybody reading ebooks I recommend to buy them on Storybundle when they are on sale.

The last three books of Wheel of Time series are written by Brandon Sanderson author of Mistborn series.
