This title actually reminded me of the Age of Sail video games, so when looking it up I saw it's latest entry which does look quite promising if I do say so myself.

If you are looking at graphic and atmosphere then I would recommend Napoleon: Total War. You'll learn the basic and still enjoy cinematic naval battle in the age of sails. But it's not really very realistic, like the ship is moving way too fast, and the kickback from a full burst of broadside is hugely exaggerated.

If you are really into sailing and might one day experience tall ship sailing, trying to learn the real thing and get a private captain licence, then try Age of Sail II and it's expansion. They work wonderfully in Win10, got nocd, and run in widescreen beautifully. You'll learn lots of the real stuffs, and will be able to tell which one is so fake in the future just by looking at them.

And best of all, they are all free. Link at here with clear instruction to get it running.

If you would like to try the new one with wonderful sea effect and good simulation as well, get <Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail>

An honorable mention is Sid Meier's Pirates. Basic sailing principle is present.
