I was just checking the Unity asset store and saw their new sales concept (just voted before time ran out):

http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/poll-community-sale-vote-for-your-favourites.395705/

The concept could easily be transposed to GOG (if the web team is not on perpetual vacation). Naturally, the main point would be the initial selection which should be varied in order to be appealing to both newbies and GOG elders at the same time (as game best-sellers like Planetscape Torment would obviously get the most votes, just like ProBuilder has 50% votes on Unity)

So, good alternative to the Insomnia sales?

The problem is that developers/publishers need to agree to sales.
If it was possible the amount of games you could choose between probably wouldn't be all that big.

That's not a problem at all I think (doesn't differ from regular sales). It's the same also for the Unity store (as they also have to get dev/publisher agreement). Aim of the business is to sell with projected revenues.

Sounds good, but the final discounts should be good too.
Sounds like a bunch of communist hoo-ha to me.
That'd be neat. It'd probably be absolute hell to actually implement though, seeing as every single discount requires an approval from the game's owners.

We'd probably have to start with those, but then once you have approvals for this amazing lineup of best-of-worthy discounts it'd kinda be a shame to just not use them.

Exactly, thank you for properly explaining my point. :)
A similar idea: users who own 50% or more of the catalog (or something like that) get an opportunity to select their favorite games, which GOG puts on sale for a week or weekend. Like "Fan Favorites: Barry_Woodward" or similar.

Don't you guys already have to do this for sales like Insomnia though? Perhaps you could narrow the selection to a few specific big publishers, and then let users vote.

This, as in, getting a crapload of approvals?
Cause that we do, it's no cakewalk but it's certainly doable. The issue I can see arises when we actually do have all these deals – but can't use them due to how the sale is structured. Even with Insomnia, there's a chance not every copy gets sold (unlikely AFAIK), but nothing gets left out of the sale.

I mean, maybe it's worth it - maybe the novelty makes up for the "unused" man-hours. But I'm not one to judge that. I am one to show this thread to our promo guys though.

Maybe you can get approvals for, say, three weekends' worth of promos. Then you put up a poll listing all the games on Monday, and on Friday morning the 1/3 of the games with the most votes go on sale. Poll stays up, and the second weekend the next 1/3 go on sale. Final weekend, the rest of the list go on sale.

Edit: Poll with just the game titles, not the proposed discounts. Otherwise people will vote for the highest discounts first.

Another aspect to take in account if it ever take place would be the display of votes as in the Unity poll case, the amount of votes can be seen (in both numbers and percentages) but as it's geared more towards professional customers, the choices follows some kind of logical thinking (re-usability of assets, support and such).

In the case of selling games which follows more some kind of irrational thinking amongst customers, I think it would be best to hide votes to avoid some kind of raid/brigading/whatever on certain games or genres which could get upvoted but not necessarly by potential buying customers.
