Did anybody else watch this Syfy channel show? It's on Netflix and I just finished watching the second of two seasons and I wondered what others thought about it (here's where I give my spoiler-y thoughts, so, if you are part-way through watching, tune out now?)

I watched the first season a while ago, and found it... well, everything seemed to be working well up until the part where the immortals show up. It just seemed to come out of nowhere and didn't really fit in with the tone the show had set up. There was nothing wrong with the medical thriller/zombie show that they had, and this twist was just ridiculous.

Well, at some point Netflix added season two, so I decided to watch it. I figured that it might work better now that they had all their cards on the table and... well, it did some interesting stuff too, but it still felt muddled. Again, the whole immortals thing just... felt unnecessary. The main half with the fungus zombies on the isolated, cult inhabited island was intriguing, and then the other half with it jumping to 30 years later to find a cure for a disease also seemed interesting, but then the immortals aspect of the story just never gelled right with the rest of the story. And it seemed like they were fishing for a third season, so then we got a last minute twist that had me yelling "what? Fucking what?" at my cat for a couple minutes after it happened while he sorta stared at me with bemused detachment and no real resolution to the 30 years later plot.

Also, I was pretty confident that Hatake straight up died on-screen in season one and he shows up in season two, is my memory playing tricks on me? I had no desire to rewatch season one before I went into season two so I could be faulty there.

If it was on FOX or CBS it would have got cancelled mid-season.
The second season, the writing just went to crap. There were several inconsistencies, several badly explained plot points, and generally speaking, it just felt like it didn't know what to do with itself. You probably have the general gist of it all. It might be best to forget the second season entirely.

Hey, Killjoys should pick up in like a month. I think SyFy shows it in the states - if you're looking for a decent TV sci-fi series, you should check that out. And of course The Expanse, but I have to figure you know about that one already.
I never heard of it. And now I don't think I'll watch it. For some reason I kind of got fed up of that kind of series. I really dislike plot twists for the sake of plot twists — they make me feel like the writers are playing games with me.

100% agree; it was interesting up until it became about immortals. I was hoping for something closer to movies like the Thing and the Andromeda Strain. Instead it became a fangless-Vampire show. I admit I mainly stayed for Jordan Hayes (aka Sarah), not only for her beauty but because she was the only character I found engaging, someone you hope would survive.

Season 2 would have been better as a separate franchise or movie. To me it did not fit in at all.

It's a shame because I liked the actors and actresses involved with the show. It was just the writing that was off.

I watched the two seasons. Not bad, but I guess the show-runner was in the fog (or in the blizzard) when he wrote the scenario, or maybe he was inspired by Lost with the time-travelling twist.
If you can stomach Helix, you can probably digest Strain, too...somehow.

Syfy has at least three decent science-fiction shows now: The Expanse (definitely the best in the bunch), Dark Matter and Killjoys.

As a personal preference: Z Nation. The show is so ridiculously bad, that actually offers good entertainment values. Is like all the writting team is on Z-Weed. The absurd situations make the whole show worth watching it, at least for me.

Seems that syfy kind of remembered that syfy stands for science-fiction and not for cooking/exploration/supernatural stuff.

Also, i can recommend something that was on AMC: Into The Badlands. A rather nice show, unexpectedly good.

P.S.: Killjoys and Dark Matter second seasons will start airing on 1st of July.

I actually don't have cable, so I'll have to wait for it to show up on Netflix. I'll definitely keep an eye out for them though.

I watched the first three episodes of The Strain and enjoyed them while I was visiting family with cable, but once I came back home I wasn't able to keep up. I think Dark Matter is on Netflix, I'll look into that. Also I know Z Nation is on Netflix because I quite enjoy that dumb show. I'll also keep an eye out for Into the Badlands, that's the post-apocalyptic Wuxia one, right? I saw the ads for it, it looked interesting.
That's the one. I think that is available on Amazon Prime on US. Definitely available on Amazon Prime for UK.
