Brian Fargo of InXile announced today on Twitter, that a faithful (in his words) remaster of the original Wasteland of 1988 will be released on GOG (as well as Steam and XBOX) on the 25th of February:

Maybe I'll play it one day (backlog!). I didn't like 8 bit graphics when that game was released and I can't imagine playing it now. But at least it had VGA colors, right?

I love Fallout 1, so I'm sure I would've played Wasteland in '88 if I knew about it and if it was available.

I'm put off by the original Wasteland graphics too, but judging from the comparison pictures on the InXile page, the new remaster will be a lot friendlier to the eye.

For someone that started PC gaming late in life (about 2004), pre-2000's graphics are off-putting so I for one am glad they bring Wasteland to this century.

That actually looks like a decent upgrade - and without ridiculous system requirement needs either.

It's also developed by the same studio that did the remasters of the original BArd's Tale games, Krome. So that in mind, I'd suspect it is going to be as faithful as possible.

Ah, so no Linux native version again. After all, if the BT remasters' Linux version is covered by Steam's Proton, so is this, right?

It might come out good. This could make the game more palatable to those who never played it and are put off by the graphics and the limitations of the interface.

Apparently, some find even the interface in the original Fallout too cumbersome for them, so, definitely a remake of Wasteland might help. As mentioned above. Yes, it is the graphics, but also interfaces, sometimes.

Yes, interface too. Plus a bonus of modern games is you get to learn them by playing. I only have fun reading the manual beforehand if it's a paper manual that I can take to bed with me, to read before I get to sleep with the trepidation of going to play the game the next day, but digital manuals don't give me that same feeling of snuggling between the sheets with the forethought of playing the next day. And I just find it easier to absorb information if it's printed rather than on a screen. I don't miss the disk-checks at all, that was an annoying kind of DRM, but I do miss the paper manuals games had when I started gaming in the mid-zeroes.

Me too, especially for games that have longer manuals and also for aditional content. Like Pillas of the Eternity, that brought a strategy guide, an almanac and then, a novella. The strategy guide and the almanac were good reads that helped to get much more of this game. And yes, on paper it would have been better.

Remembering now some epic manuals, both thick and thin, that not only helped, but also contributed to setting the mood for the game.

That would be a nice one. I don't know if money can be made with it or it would be too niche? It's mostly old geezers who remember the pleasure of paper manuals.

In any case, kickstarters include physical rewards as well. And there are kickstarters for RPG (tabletop) that have even included deluxe versions of printed game manuals with great success.

No need for a leather bound manual with bronze decorations and penned with a phoenix quill dipped in dragon blood. Just a regular edition would do =)

Then again, there might be room for limited deluxe editions.

I just hope they don't pull a Blood Remake and make it so that one has to buy the new one to get the old one(for people who just want the old one, that is).

It seems like a good idea, though, and I hope it does well/is a good finished product. :)

Wasteland is literally $2 right now in the sale, so anyone worried about it should grab it.

Good point. Still, some are either on a tight budget and might want to save that money for something else or have a huge backlog and be on the fence as to whether or not to buy it(some likely think "I can pick it up in another sale" as I have in the past). Add to that the people who have yet to sign up to GOG.

But yeah, if they want it they should buy it now....just in case.

I'm hoping that:
* The ability to restart the game with the same characters, possible in the original release via a utility included in the game, will be included.
* It will still be possible to duplicate characters. (The method for doing so was *clearly* intentional.)
