Asbeau: I'm not criticising you at all, but I just don't get it.
For me, having an internet capable device in my pocket at all times is one of the great tech advances of the last decade or two.
I thought so too, but in reality I use my smartphone quite little at least for web browsing. It is still just so damn awkward with the touch controls and on a small screen, I really wouldn't want to e.g. write this message with my phone. I guess the web pages which are designed for mobile devices are ok, but they tend to be restricted (e.g. if I go to hs.fi for news with the phone, I can't neither read nor write reader comments there, only read the news articles themselves).
My wife is online with her phone all the time, but I guess it is due to Facebook. I don't do Facebook etc. so maybe that is why I find so little use being online with my phone.
The most important "smart usage" for my phone is using its car navigation capabilities, but I don't really need to be online for that. In fact I require that the car navigation must work also in offline mode, when I am using it abroad. I use MapFactor navigator with offline OpenMaps downloaded to the device.
Oh I forgot, another handy thing nowadays is its calender so that I don't have to fire up my work laptop only to see what meetings or appointments I have the next week. Yeah that is actually quite important for me nowadays. But it still irks me how slow and cumbersome it is to write messages or edit text with a phone...
