I personally feel the reason why orchestras were floundering is because the general public does not want to sit down and listen to music for 2-4 hours of the same piece.

Pretty much this. I remember Video Games Live was playing in my home city when I was back, and I was kicking myself for not booking early when I had the chance. Everything sold out seemingly in a matter of hours.
It would be nice if they added Beethoven's 9th symphony to Hatred's soundtrack.
