trentonlf: I think it's a fake (I guess rendered), I base it only on the fact that I see no shadows or hint of a shadow anywhere in the pic.
The reclining chairs have small shadows... But it's hitting evening time and it's overcast which is removing most of the shadows.

I'm going to say it's real, based on the lack of repeating patterns, and the ocean section doesn't looks like something that's easily reproducible.

That's because the sun has already set. The only reason the picture seems bright as daytime is because it was shot with HDR...

Edit: Compare it to this (sigificantly better) HDR photo: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/HDR_image_%2B_3_source_pictures_%28Cerro_Tronador%2C_Argentina%29.jpg

I think it's a real picture.

Tallima: Is this from a ray-tracing renderer?
Is it from a video game?
Or is it real?
Yes

ZFR: Yes
I'm glad you cleared that up...

I don't think the sun has set, and if it has there are no lights anywhere either. No lights, shadows, or people. I don't see it as a real picture.

I see black legs on the chairs, but I don't see any shadows.

Well, you're wrong, but okay...

The lights might not be turned on, or it's a weekend where they prettied up the site just for a picture in a magazine.. You don't want weird people in your fantasy vision of a magazine for a tour, much like you don't want someone with personality in your zelda game (instead you imprint yourself there).

Based on the angle, time of day, etc, they intentionally took the picture as is to highlight the paradise setting. Lack of shadows may just be due to the time of day or they took several hundred pictures, and selected the one most pleasing to the eye.
Alright. You guys ready for the answer?

This was taken by my friend (more accurately described as the brother of the wife of my friend :D). He does filming and whatnot -- weddings are his bread and butter. So he's at a wedding in Antigua and this was one of his aerial shots.

The photo: https://instagram.com/p/9dzIYjFfvV/?taken-by=stillframepictures

The shot is a still from aerial footage.

My friend said "We were reviewing the aerial footage of this particular villa afterwards, noting how the architecture lines are the most perfectly straight and symmetrical we have ever seen in a structure so complex. And the landscaping is so perfectly manicured, that from the air, with the dusk lighting creating no shadows, it all looks like a video game model."

Since I knew it was a photo, I was curious what people thought about. Because when I first saw it, my response was "It's only a model." :)

By the way, my buddy also works on various other projects. He did a fan film of Mocking Jay and his bow was actually purchased by LionsGate and used for promos and whatnot (I'm not sure if it actually got in the actual movie). I think (don't quote me) that the original bow got ruined and they needed another in a hurry and his met specs perfectly.

Here it is if you're curious: http://jonathanparris.com/mockingjay/mockingjay.html

My initial reaction was that it was a fake, but after looking more closely at the foreground, I changed my mind. The main reason that it looks so fake is that there's a ton of separation between the palms and their back ground.

But, if you look at the water and the variation in the trees, it's highly unlikely that somebody could or would fake that.

How was it captured? The one thing that seems odd about it is the perspective. Was it a drone or a camera on a kite?

A drone. I don't know what camera he uses for his drone shots.

Cool. I thought the detail was too good to be a fake.
Wow, that's very impressive. Those are the artistic skills I envy at times.
Wanted to post before I read replies, looks like a real photo to me.

It's shopped, I can tell by the pixels.

Actually, it did look like a photograph to me, after some closer inspection. Mostly because of the variation and movement in the trees, and some other details which are hard to reproduce through digital media. But at a brief glance there's definitely something video game esque to it. Only goes to show how far video game visuals and virtual worlds have come, if we can barely tell the difference any more.
