What's this about then? I don't have a cable subscription or an actual TV and I don't want either, so I tried figuring out if there was a feasible way to actually watch it from home with low or no cost.
I first looked at Sling.TV but the big missing feature was that none of the games there could be watched after the fact. Only live matches are shown there, and obviously that's a big negative as most of us here in the US won't be able to watch the games at the time of their live broadcast. So I started looking into the murky mess that is VPNs and maybe wiggling my way onto BBC's iPlayer or iTV's web player, but from all that I've read that can be very hit and miss. It also looked like way too big of a headache to even go for a trial and error method. I've even tried a torrent of the France-Romania match from yesterday, but the quality was complete pants, so that didn't seem like a viable option either.
So I looked at other options and I ended up stumbling over ESPN's online portal dubbed WatchESPN (formerly ESPN3). Figures that the live matches were for subscription users only, which actually looks like it also can be used (interestingly enough) by Sling.TV users. That said, the replays of said games are not locked... at least not to me as a Comcast broadband internet subscriber, so I essentially will be able to watch the tournament for free by happenstance, which is superb! Tried out watching parts of the France-Romania and Albania-Switzerland matches without a problem - I already knew the scores from those games, so I wasn't wild about watching them while already knowing how they'd end.
Anyway, so this was a pleasantly surprising discovery. It's not like I will be able to watch much of this tournament while live anyway, especially during the week, so catching up on the games after work for free is just ace! So there you have it fellow Comcast internet subscribers: You can have your game on, too... should you be interested. ;)
Now out of curiosity, anyone who doesn't use Comcast - maybe Time Warner, for example - would you be willing to try to see if you'd be able to access replay matches in that way, too? I just want to help out my fellow football fans.
