Starmaker: Ouch. People want backer-exclusive content. Why would anyone consider leaving today's kids no choice but to pirate a good idea?
This just in:
It is important to us to reward Torment’s backers for the faith and trust they will place in us. But while we believe that many backers would enjoy exclusive content, we are persuaded by the arguments that have been presented against this type of reward.

What it basically comes down to is this: altering the gameplay experience for backers feels inconsistent with the spirit of crowdfunding as we see it. Our commitment to our backers is first and foremost to create the best game possible – and not just for them, but for everyone who desires the game we are promising to deliver.

We are pleased to announce that we are thus discarding the rewards that would influence gameplay through exclusive content. Thank you all very much for your feedback and perspectives. Long live the Tormented!
Yeah I just got that email too, seems kinda phoney that they even put that stuff up for vote, they already knew from the WL2 Kickstarter that the backers hate exclusive stuff.
If they want to release backer specific content for a limited time at first I kinda get that, but it should be released to the public at some point as dlc or in the form of a patch.
It definitely would invite piracy or loss in sales.
I think its a good call on their part to rethink it.
They probably saved themselves from losing a few backers.

And from having an automatically split fan community. I don't think it would have contributed much to excitement about the game if people who didn't back it had been made to feel second-tier.

Fenixp: "the newest Torment asks: What does one life matter?"
Oh dear lord, they're going into it with 'making a philosophical and artsy game' mindset. There has ever been only so few instances where this actually worked, and I don't believe the original Planescape was amongst them (amongst those that were made to be artsy that is, not amongst those which are amazing - as PST IS amazing.)
Just got to put my two cents in. The lead writers of PS:T have - many times over the past decade and change - said that the game was in fact made with the intent to answer the basic question "what can change the nature of a man?" It's certainly put into the game prominently, especially if you play though it with high INT, WIS, CHA instead of a more physical hack and slash style. (Google Chris Avellone Placescape and take your pick from hundreds of links)
Now, I didn't get that feeling when I first played it. But let's give them benefit of the doubt, shall we? Maybe it really was, and it simply was done so well as to make you discover it rather than lead you by the nose to it. That's the best possible way to tell a story in an interactive context, I'd think - make the player reveal the story or message. Something to be hoped for, at least.

Leroux: You mean some kind of consistency in naming sequels? C'mon, it's in the best tradition of games like Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (sequel of sorts to Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain) or Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2 (sequel to Worlds of Ultima). ;)
-------------------------
Anyway, like I said, I'd have preferred that they leave Torment out of the title, too, since it makes the concept sound quite unimaginative. I liked the word better when it had an actual meaning related to the first game, not as the brand name for a series.

GameRager: You forgot the Jedi Knight games.....Dark Forces, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, etc.
----------
I like it...imo it's a nice homage to the game that inspired/is inspiring it.
Meh, Jedi Knight is most likely the only case ever in which I am somewhat okay with a changed/irregular naming scheme and even there it irks me a bit on principle.
GUYS, vote for my my suggestion! (if you like it)

So, they are talking about a Torment like kickstarter.
Problem is WL2 is still being made and all the backers including myself want them to concentrate on finishing that (and any if expansions etc afterwards) rather than talking about a possible torment kickstarter.

Brian Fargo addressed that in an interview. WL2 is in production, the stories are already written and the concept artists are no longer needed. Instead of letting them go he's doing pre-production for Torment.

Also check this out on the suggestions site.

Does that mean they dont intend to do any addons or expansions for WL2 ?

You don't do expansions until the base product is actually succesful. Or at least you shouldn't.
