Kotaku is revealing the top 100. I usually enjoy watching or reading top-whatever without giving them too much credibility.
However, DLCompare claims that 50, 000 people were involved in this poll. I thought this was significant enough to share this information with you. Enjoy!

Yup, it was a poll done by one of the TV studios Tele Asahi so it has some decent traction although not as legitimate as maybe a big pool on a gaming website.

Definitely some good games on the list. Main point I got was that the interests of Japanese gamers are very different from Western gamers (or at least US gamers).

Also saw comments by US people saying the list is trash so that follows lol.
Ah yes, Tetris, Apex Legends and Undertale in top 30. I'm surprised Witcher 3 isn't number 1.

Edit: Nevermind, for some reason I thought it supposed to be games made in Japan.

For sure. There are a handful of western games (not a big surprise there), which tells me that they must be pretty darn good if they made it to this top 100.

I understand that, but I guess I expected at least one of my top 20 Japanese games on that list. Makes me wonder how so many games I consider good come from Japan at all, given that apparently the Japanese don't like them, and the US tends to avoid Japanese games altogether. I guess you could say that at least most games on that list are in the style that I like. Even a couple from a series I like (although I prefer other entries in that series).

By comparison, a typical western list will include a few of my top 10, but will mostly consist of games whose style I don't even like.

"Style" above meaning gameplay style, not art style. I rarely care one way or the other about art style, except that some games are consistently ugly to me, such as Warhammer games.

Dark Souls, Street Fighter. Resident Evil, Persona, All these are hugely popular (in the West) main stream Japanese games.

Honestly, hardly any surprises, all great games, mostly Nintendo and RPGs. I agree with most of this list.

Yeah, they're primarily console gamers. Have been for a very long time.
Nearly only japanese games, and on the handful of non-japanese games, Tetris is there because it was heavily promoted by Nintendo.
Eh, I feel sorry for the japanese gamers who are missing on so many other good games from around the world.
Hmmm Undertale is on GOG. *me has a quick look* Hmmmmmm. Not even on sale either....

Maybe they are aware of those games, just didn't care for them.
I expected to see Street Fighter 2 on the list, since it's the game that set the standards for fighting games. Oddly enough, no other fighting games are on the list, even though the genre dominated by Japanese devs.

I do think its a big part a matter of taste and another the strict rating system blocking many notable western games.

The notable games that seem to be missing are Witcher 3, GTA, Red Dead Redemption 2, Halo, Half Life, Mass Effect, Batman Arkham, and God of War.

Alot of these games are rated Z which is the highest rating of 18 or above (Witcher 3, RDR2, God of War, GTA, CoD, TLoU, Ass Creed. In comparison, even Resident Evil, Yakuza, MGS, and Evil Within has a D rating. That already limits their accessibility compared to other games like Monster Hunt (C) or Zelda (B).

FPS games like Half Life and Halo also arnt as popular in Japan compared to the US, hence their lack of their appearance here.

Very true.
