Welcome to the first Throwback Thursday of the year! To kickstart this 2022 edition, we thought we'd do a quick recap of the initiative for those of you who are new to the initiative or aren't sure what it is.

The Throwback Thursday project is a weekly recommendation series, done in cooperation with The Video Games History Foundation. In it, both members of our GOG team and people from the foundation recommend classic games dear to their hearts. The posts come with a short summary of the game, and a few kind sentences from one of their fan, so that you can feel that special connection. Critically acclaimed or not, it's games we love and remember for our own personal, and believe are worth highlighting again! The testimonials are also visible on the game pages themselves, and you can find all previous games we've written about, on this page.

The goal is to recommend you great games you might have missed, showcasing the sincere love we all share for classics and getting you more familiar with a few faces from GOG! On top of that, it's our opportunity to talk to you about our friends and partners, The Video Games History Foundation. It's a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and teaching the history of video games, and you can learn more about it in an interview with their founder, right here.

We hope to make you (re)discover many classics in 2022, so stay tuned for us and let us know in comments what game is dear to your heart, maybe we'll write about that one!

I think it's more of a Microsoft problem than a GOG problem.

And either way, MS won't allow the selling of the original as they've made the Definitive Edition where they could jack up the price again. They won't start hurting their profits by offering the original game for cheaper.

I will never surrender.

I will keep asking gog.com to ask MicroSoft to do a deal with them to make this become a reality.

I will never give up, I will give up only on the day I die.

So I will ask this every Thursday in this topic for the rest of my life.

Shouldn't you be asking Microsoft instead?
Shouldn't we have, well, gotten a Throwback Thursday this Thursday though?

That ball's definitely, 100% in Microsoft's court, nothing GOG or anyone else can do about it, and they won't let their games go elsewhere, or DRM free, or of course release originals when they can price gouge on remasters...

I'd expect more Microsoft games likely will end up on PC Game Pass and/or Windows Store, unfortunately not on GOG.

Dogmaus: Title: Throwback Thursday
When: every Thursday
This one is about: nothing
I'm glad to see Morrowind, TLJ, BG&E, and the underrated Arcanum in the list from the link.

Nope, because gog.com works out deals with video game publishing companies to get the video games released for sale on gog.com.

A requirement for that is for the rightsholder to be in any way interested in selling. Or for GOG to have leverage they can use to pressure them into it I guess. Neither of those applies to MS in the least.
A small indie dev/pub might be swayed if GOG would be desperate enough to sign them on to offer an advance, or even an upfront amount in addition to the subsequent cut from sales, but the MS board would laugh at even an offer of the entire market value of GOG...

I fell it 2022 is the year we get the classic old Dune video games developed by Westwood Studios from the 1990's.

With gog.com working to bring the The Wheel of Time video game to be sold on gog.com I feel that gog.com will work out a deal with the owners of Dune and Electronic Arts (EA) to sell the classic old Dune video games from the 1990's on gog.com.

Or I am still playing Half-Life and Half-Life 2 on gog.com 100% Digital Rights Management (DRM) free in a alternate universe.

Come on 2022 let me see the classic old Dune video games selling on gog.com and Command & Conquer selling on gog.com in 2022.
Don't think Herbert's family changed their mind on that...

"Oh my god, we’ve spoken to so many people who were even remotely engaged in the process of creating Dune II. Westwood was involved and as it turned out, not all the rights went to EA when they bought them. Some code rights went to some of the actual programmers, but they were residual so we’d need to sign with both them and EA. Talking to EA is always a huge process because they’re such a huge company. Asking for the documents, which are in paper form, that’s a level of time and engagement that might not be worth it in terms of business. But there was this one guy who knew about the case because he was personally interested and he said that all the rights had reverted to Frank Herbert’s family.

Somehow, I don’t want to know how, one colleague got a contact for them, and they unfortunately said they didn't want to revive anything. It wasn’t a case of not understanding games, just a straight-up, ‘If it’s old it should stay old’. It was so unbelievably frustrating. But of course, they have a right to that decision. It’s theirs. If they feel so strongly, who are we to judge them for it?"

More on topic though, this project seems rather gone?

I want the original FINAL FANTASY video game from 1988 from Square.

I want the original 1998 Resident Evil video game from Square.

I want Street Fighter from Capcom.

Maybe Mario Teaches Typing from Nintendo for the PC, that video game used to be in elementary schools back in the 1990's.
