The C64 had a (for its time) revolutionary soundchip. The first soundcards for PCs (AdLib, etc.) appeared only around 5-6 years later and were much more expensive than a complete C64 (or even an Amiga that that came out around that time and had an even better soundchip).

But naturally it was quite restricted in what it could do. It is after all more than 40 years old by now. It could only play three synth tracks and one sample track at the same time. And samples were not used most of the time because they cost so much memory.

Despite such limitations there was a lot of game music that blew everything on any other system of the time out of the water. Because the C64 was so widespread and every C64 had the same soundchip the musicians working with it had standardized hardware they could learn to make use of better and better over time.

While several hundred people made music for the C64 there were probably only about one dozen geniuses that cranked out one hit after another.

One of those people is Jeroen Tel (aka WAVE, founding member of the Maniacs of Noise). Music by him that everyone who is into synth game music should have heard:

Cybernoid I and II
Supremacy
Robocop 3
Hawkeye
Alloyrun
Turbo Outrun
Afterburner

Have fun listening!

P.S.: Naturally he made a lot more music. But if you like what you find above I'm sure you can search his name on YouTube and find many more songs to listen to.

Geralt_of_Rivia: The C64 had a (for its time) revolutionary soundchip.
The C64 was such an important part of my boyhood... and its SID chip made such a deep impression on me. Those sounds are forever etched into my memory.
So much great music made for the system... I still listen to it from time to time. I could go on writing about it for a fairly long stretch, but I don't think that posting long lists would really be worth it.

Jeroen Tel is surely one of the great composers on the C64. His music is really something special: his ideas are brilliant and memorable, the sounds well developed, colourful and sophisticated.
I could add to your great list some of my personal favourites: Savage, Smash TV, Myth, Eliminator, Gaplus, Tomcat, and Scout (plus Rubicon with Reyn Ouwehand).

Rob Hubbard, Tim Follin, Chris Huelsbeck, Martin Galway, Jonathan Dunn, Ben Daglish, Fred Gray, Matt Gray, Laxity, DRAX, Thomas Detert...
Personally I also enjoy the music of Martin Walker, Mark Wilson, Charles Deenen and Johannes Bjerregaard a lot, among others.
It's a rainy day today, so I'll share with you a short rain video game music playlist
Rain

music from Superliminal
Impostor Factory
Tunic
Fall of Porcupine
GRIS

Naturally there were more good musicians than just Jeroen Tel on the C64 and no list of C64 sound wizards would be complete without Hubbard, Galway or Daglish. I just wanted to focus on one person for starters and not post a huge list right from the start.

Three more recommendations for lovers of C64 music:

The High Voltage SID Collection: This contains pretty much every SID song ever made archived into less than 80 MB. You need a music player able to play .sid files though. Recommendations can be found on the website if you don't have one. This collection is daunting, but if you ever get a C64 song recommended you can be 99.9% sure to find it in there.

deepsid.chordian.net: If you don't feel like downloading the entire HVSID collection you can listen to any song online here.

remix.kwed.org: A popular website for remixes of C64 music. Tons of great remixes to be found here. If you like any specific C64 song search for remixes here and listen to some of the highly rated ones.
Sometimes, you just gotta' leave the past behind.

I really have to add probably my favorite piece of video game music, Dearly Beloved.
Who can forget this amazing work with someone playing music ON their Gameboy DMG?

Here is a song from a game with amazing graphics (the game still looks great today, 14 years after release), amazing music and an amazing story. And the best thing about it: You can get the game DRM-free here on GOG.
