Any news about the Thalion rights?

Piranjade: I also cannot believe it! :-D

I kept trying and trying but either got no answer at all or people didn't know anything about the rights.
And then I tried an angle that I was sure would be a dead end (that's why I hadn't tried it before) - and it worked out. That lead me to the previous to last rights holder who answered me very nicely and told me where the rights went and where they should still be.
Fingers crossed that we have now really reached the end of the chain and the rights owner is interested in using the rights.

Quick question, the old id games like Doom and Wolfenstein 3D are considered Abandonware? And is it legal to play them on Abandonware websites that distribute them for free?

kizuxtheo: Quick question, the old id games like Doom and Wolfenstein 3D are considered Abandonware?
1) "Abandonware" is not a legal concept at all. It's just like the phrase "a good game": it has a meaning but how exactly it's defined depends on the person doing the definition.
2) Almost all personal definitions of abandonware exclude games that are still being sold. Doom and Wolfenstein 3D are being sold, including here on GOG.

No.

ZFR: No.
That's what I always say, don't know why there are people that think these games can be downloaded for free and consider them "Abandonware" when they are still legally distributed (maybe they were considered that at one point when DOSbox wasn't a thing and platforms like Steam weren't well known, but now you can buy them legally).

tfishell: I tried to contact http://www.tsf-org.org/?page=tsf-about-people in 2013 - both Michel and Benoit of C2V worked there - but I didn't get an answer then and now the email addresses don't work.

If you find an online way to contact him I could certainly try again, but you may just want to do it yourself. :) I don't have as much time as I used to put effort into this, especially since it's not like I was making a living off this.

Novalon: Try this email: Xavier.kral(at)gmail.com

It's his new address. I think it should work.

Anyway, I was in contact with Xavier before and he told me once that Michel Delvel has copies of Valkyrie. I have not heard any updates from him, however. I am tempted to contact Michel myself but I do not know his current email address.
Hey thanks, I'll try to remember to give it a shot but I think you may want to be the one to try it. :) I heard back from Benoit Hap months ago, but he didn't seem to want to discuss the matter and I didn't want to push it. I heard back from Benoit at a "@tsf-org.org" email (I don't feel comfortable giving it out); you could try info@technologiesansfrontieres.org and ask for Benoit or Michel. (There was also a "web@technologiesansfrontieres.org" but that one didn't go through.)

Hello!

I assume the rights are still with Hannes Sommer and the Cosmo Designs group, no idea if they are still active in any way but their website is still up

http://www.cosmos-c64.com/sites/frameset.htm

If you go into members (or contact) you can find email adresses to Hannes Sommer and other members of the group.

Prah already told you what you need to know for this specific game, but I'll throw in my 2cents.

My advice:
To find the rights to a game, it helps to start with the developer and try to find credits. http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/super-nibbly gives no credits but mentions http://www.mobygames.com/company/cosmos-designs and one of their other games, http://www.mobygames.com/game/freds-back, mentions these people - http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,209802/ and http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,209804/

So moving forward you should try to find them on social media like LinkedIn.

I don't do much game rights' research myself anymore but hopefully this helps you or others.
I have recently talked with Vox Day (Theodore Beale) about releasing his games from his old studio, Fenris Wolf, on GOG. He said that he contacted GOG about getting his games on the platform and that they never replied to him. I think it would be a shame to miss this opportunity since he supposedly owns the rights to Rebel Moon series, which, I hear, is fairly good. He also owns the rights to The War In Heaven. Granted, I hear that game is not very good but preserving games is always a positive thing.
Please pm me about Thalion. We have been working on trying to find the rights as well. Specifically Lionheart.

We have capital already saved up for an acquisition like this.

Hope PiranJade can contact me. We can really help.

Doom and Wolfenstein are not abandonware; HOWEVER, their game engines are considered to have been released as free and open source.

Erik Simon (one of the cofounders of the company) has a Linkdin and a professional website. I'd suggest starting there.

For some reason in mobile it doesn’t let me quote nor tag people.

I know Erik Prince, he doesn’t know where the rights are at.
Just throwing some info on an "unsolved case" out here:

Last info I heard on the game 1998 game Gunmetal is that all assets were turned over to "receiver firm Campbell Saunders in Vancouver" ; "The guy who ran [Mad Genius software's] account was named David Gray" - I believe this is the Campbell - http://csvan.com/

I believe this was the David Gray - https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidgraysummitgroup/

I tried contacting both Campbell and Gray a few years ago, never got a response. If somebody wants to try instead, please do. Maybe living in Canada could help :P.
