Carradice: Did you get to play it already? Is the crew really intended to be expendable? Can you keep them if you really wish so, like in Darkest Dungeon or Battle Brothers, or they are intended to be expendable from the get go?
avatar
NuffCatnip: Didn't have the time to install it yet, wanted to start playing a bit on Saturday.
From what I've gathered they are intended to be expendable, if they finish too many missions unharmed they'll even receive a debuff.
There are rare materials that let you revive units.
Except for the reviving mechanic there is no healing, you have to sacrifice units to heal.
Thanks for the explanation, Nuff.

Well, now I am intrigued. These features are a hard sell for anyone who prefers games where you can get attached to the members of your team. So, knowing that this is the case with many people who plays tactical games (me included), I wonder what does this game offer in order to make it work for people. Maybe there is a convincing in-game rationale, or the gameplay really wants this expendability to happen.

So, not giving it a hard no so far, but the game really ought to make this mechanic worth it somehow

Cavalary: Ouch. Unshakeable reasons for a hard no right there, regardless of anything else. Pity...
To make things worse, the sacrifice has to be on the same level or higher. You can't sacrifice new lower level units. :(

I still got the game, it looks like a lot of fun, I just hope that it is fun as well. :D

Sure thing!
I really hope it's worth it as well. :)

That's why I tend to save scum...to keep my favourites alive, which in this game is impossible as the game autosaves at every turn..or was it every move?. xD

tfishell: It'd be easier to do one of my iconic recommendations for Pajama Sam Vol. 1 if it was -60% instead of the actual -50% (and of course if they finally got the non-English versions like Steam), but $5 is still a decent deal. Vol. 2 is harder to recommend b/c only 1/3 of the games I've really enjoyed, but that one - Pajama Sam 3: You Are What You Eat - is a very good adventure game. Altogether, Pajama Sam 1, 2, and 3 are quality adventure games aimed at kids :)
I would really enjoy to have the German versions, so I made a wishlist entry:

I haven't really played it more than 1/2 hour or so, either, mainly to verify it works on my machine (Linux/wine).

First of all, there are two play modes. One mode partially auto-heals your characters and gives out more resurrection pills. You can probably just create new characters for the purpose of sacrificing them if you want to retain specific ones (for this run only, as far as I know). You might also be able to resurrect characters from previous runs, but I haven't gotten that far yet. (edit: I guess healing requires training your sacrifice first, as mentioned above).

Second, I think both modes are single save lslot, autosave frequently type games (probably possible to work around using external save game copies, which I will verify later today).

Third, it's one of those games that you have to lose in order to progress. In other words, losing unlocks features you will probably need or want. See e.g. FTL and other modern games claiming to be roguelikes.

edit: I guess I missed some better replies above. Just one line of text in the middle of a sale announcement is a terrible way to introduce a new game. For one thing, it's hard to separate the discussion of the game itself from the sale and the 5 other games apparently also announced here.

Thanks for the reply. You managed to shed additional light on this game. Indeed, the game ought to have its own separate "blue" thread.

So, some roguelike elements, resurrecting characters from past runs... Interesting! Now I wonder about these two game modes. In Darkest Dungeon they introduced the "sunshine" or "light" (something like that) mode, with a difficulty less overwhelming. Maybe these two games are something like that...?

By the way, Crying Suns is a neat addition to the sale. Very recommended for anyone who likes FTL: it is easy to pick up and play in chunks of time (but it is a different beast: now you command a cruiser-carrier). The theme is a tad more serious, without forgetting some dark humour now and then. There are references to famous SF works that you can enjoy if you know them, and do not get in the way if you do not. All in all, the presentation is honest since it is what it seems to be, and you can keep playing it the same way that FTL lends itself to be replayed over and over. Although there is more of a story here, so that is another incentive to keep going at it.

I've been holding off on buying the game (backlog!) but I love the idea and have almost bought it twice now. How come it's listed as "added"? I SWEAR it was there on the first day of the same at 50% - I was going to buy it (and Outer Worlds) but I usually wait until Thurs / Fri, just in case there's another game release (one credit card purchase and all).

But yeah - I LOVED the idea of the game ever since release and knew I'd get it at some point.

Um, I bought The Occupation on Monday for 75% off, so how is it just being added?

Interesting. The script works on lines in a file. Any difference causes the game to be reported as added. I haven't thought the discount may also change...

PS. And these two have just been added (or changed):
• $4.99 • -50% • The Quest
• $5.99 • -70% • Victor Vran

Did you try the demo? I'm guessing you did but for anyone else who might be reading this thread I recommend trying the demo. I didn't like it at all, worse than FTL for me and I didn't like that one much either. For Crying Suns a big part of the issue is that I like story focused games and that one had quite a bit of story but it was incoherent well past my willingness to suspend disbelief for the purpuse of the game. Also, the world was gratuitously cruel and that isn't something I'm looking for in a game. But yay for demos, anyone can give it a try and see if you like it (and I just checked and the demo claims to be 413MB, so not even one where you need to download many GB just to try the game).

I did enjoy Into the Breach quite a bit and I'd recommend that for anyone looking for that kind of game.
Aww no Monster Bash?

Dream mode gives you an extra rez token and heals your daughters each day. You get shards for completing synapses. Shards get added to the shards pool maximum which regenerates each play through. These shards can be used to activate remembrances.

These are very powerful - they include more rez tokens - you can keep a specific team of daughters by using the rez tokens each playthrough. Just remember to regularly clear unused daughters from the cemetery - there's a max limit.

The remembrances can also let you start at the highest era you have reached. Furthermore if you reach day 4 of an era you can fight the boss of that era right from the beginning.

All these combine to essentially remove almost all aspects of the rougelike element from the game. The only thing you really lose are memories - equipment that can buff your daughters.

Thank you! Some aspects of this are somewhat obscure for someone who has not played the game, but two ideas can be extracted: 1) The game offers ways to keep your original team if you really wish to do so. 2) There seems to be an in-game rationale and game mechanics that at least might make interesting to consider playing the game without keeping all the units.
