Well, here we go again.. Every year the same song and dance. I reinstall GW2, make a pot of coffee, and get stuck at character creation for hours trying to come up with fancy names for my characters. It always ends up with a lot of cursing and not making any meaningful progress. Final Fantasy XIV makes it so easy with their name generator. Two clicks and you get a lore appropriate cool name and you're good to go. Naming characters is my weakness. I start sweating nervously when my friend sends me a message asking when we're gonna start a new Icewind Dale playthrough with custom characters.

This may all be a huge exaggeration, but the point is: I'm giving away a copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl (one of my personal favorites) to the person who can come up with the best name for my Guild Wars 2 character. I'm too lazy to do this myself, and it's a good opportunity to recruit another soul to the cult of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I'm thinking I'll make a female sylvari elementalist this time. Yes, the plant-people. Here's some clues from the GW2 wiki to get some ideas:

"Sylvari names, as well as place names in their starting zone Caledon Forest, are generally inspired by Celtic (Irish, Scots Gaelic and Welsh) names. Sylvari do not have surnames, as they're all part of the same "family," though to each other they are more like distant relatives except in special cases."

I'll let the giveaway run sometime into the middle of next week, then I'll pick a winner. You may enter for someone if you wish.

I'm gonna go drive some forklifts now. Have a nice weekend, everyone!

Not in but good on you giving away such a great title.

I'll probably drop back later with some silly non entries.

I need to know more about what you want her to be like. Typically, game devs give character names something that represents them in some way. Take FInal Fantasy XV's Ignis, the cook, with firey hair, a bit wirey, and he's the party black mage (although it's hard to see it given how the game plays). You could sit down with a cheap "scottish baby names" list or something, too, but that's no fun. In minecraft, me and my GF basically used google translate to give everyone in this one village latin names based on which enchanged books they had, like Redintegrus for mending.

Nàdar (Masculine)
Blàthaich (verb: To flourish)
Draodhachd (Fem N: Seems to be a cognate of Druid)
Obag (Fem N: Spell)
Ortha (Fem N: Incantation or Prayer)
Tiodhlacnàdair (Tiodhlac+Nàdair)

Thank you google translate, but also keep in mind something like "spell" could be "incantation" or "sequence of letters" when throwing them into google translate. And google translate can be wrong, too.

Oh, and I already have the game, so i'm not concerned with a prize.
Names can be tricky. I usually create the character first and then choose a name that "fits". E. g. going by the character's looks, abilities/skills, character traits or background story (or a combination of those). If the lore has certain boundaries for names (like in this specific case), it can make things easier.

I'm not in. (Of course. I didn't even try.) But it will probably be fun to see/read what others come up with.
Cruisgaotineen.

The name comes from Irish:
- cré: earth
- uisce: water
- gaoth: wind
- tine: fire

Which fits an elementalist pretty well, I think.

To which I added the Anglo-Irish suffix:
-een
which is a diminutive suffix, i.e. "little one", to make it more recognisable as a name.

Pronounced:
Krish - Get - In - Een
with the accent on the "Get".

Good point. That would indeed help with thinking up creative names. I'll create a character and post a picture and list of the traits tomorrow after I'm done with my forklifting.

Also, that's a very clever way to name villages in Minecraft. I love it! I used to have some pretty creative ways to name my worms in Worms World Party/Armageddon LAN-parties too. And names for cities in Civilization.
sorry, wrong thread

I suggest:
Angharyad

Angharad is a Welsh female name meaning 'much loved', I added an 'y' near the end to also make it closer to 'dryad', as appropriate for sylvari culture.
Thanks for the giveaway, not in though.

Some cool names:
Neytiri
Eytukan
Tsu'tey
Toruk Makto
Jake Sully

ez!
It was a long, busy day, but I finally had some time to sit down at the PC now and try my hand at making a character. Here's a portrait of the character and some traits to help with the brainstorming. I don't have much to provide in the way of backstory or personality or anything. I'm not too good at the whole roleplaying thing..

Random_Coffee: I'm thinking I'll make a female sylvari elementalist this time.
You're speaking my language, my friend. :-)

Rather than throwing you a fish, I’ll teach you how to fish:
https://www.babynames.com/names/search.php

That's my go-to site to help me find names for all my RPG characters.

Sylvari tend to have Scottish, Welch or Gaelic (Irish) names. Pick your gender: male, female or neutral. And then… here’s the kicker… think about a MEANING for your name. As an Elementalist, perhaps you want to focus on fire magic: so you might type in “fire” or “summer” in the “meaning” field on that page. Or think about the personality of your character. Perhaps you want to be a Sylvari who fights to defend the Pale Tree above all else: you might choose “defender” or “protector” in the “meaning” field.

And because I’m a bit of a lore-nut who has played Guild Wars since the original open beta of GW1 back in 2004… here’s some extra GW2 geek-lore-stuff:

Sylvari only have a first name, because Sylvari do not sexually reproduce. The Sylvari race has only existed on Tyria for about 25 years, and every Sylvari has been spawned from a seed pod from the Pale Tree. So, technically speaking, every existing Sylvari is a sibling of every other Sylvari, even though our player-character Sylvari are a generation or two older than the Firstborn, such as Caithe.

Sylvari do not choose a name. Nor are they given a name by the Pale Tree or any of their relatives. When a Sylvari awakens, they simply know their name. Or, more specifically, their name is something they discover during their time in “The Dream” (aka “the Sylvari tutorial instance”).

VERY IMPORTANT: Sylvari do not have family or clan names (i.e. they only have a first name), but if a Sylvari chooses to append something to their given name, it will be it a sort of honorific which represents the cycle of the day when they awakened, such as “Tristan of the Dawn” or “Myraleth Duskborn”.

So, your Sylvari should ideally have just a single name. Use that link I provided to find a name based on your choice of origin (ideally Irish, Scottish, Welch… but maybe something else if it strikes your fancy), gender, and meaning (think about some defining attribute of your character). If that name is already chosen, then append an honorific representing the cycle of the day in which your Sylvari awakened, or possibly your profession or personality.

Examples: a thief named Canath awakened in the cycle of noon might be referred to as Canath Noonshadow; a thief named Canath awakened in the cycle of night might be referred to as Nightwalker Canath.

The two sisters are so different in character. Tilatuviel loves water, the cold of the night, quiet places, prudent animals and the glare of the moon. Brigaduviel loves fire, the heat of summer, dangerous places, fierce animals and the blaze of the sun.
Gaelic names of plants that I think have feminine qualities.
