Over the decades, gaming has expanded in ways people could never have imagined, but one genre that has continued to stand the test of time while still growing is the action-adventure genre.

For almost as long as there have been video games, action-adventure games and their real-time action, puzzles, and exploration have intrigued gamers all over the world. While we could spend years talking about our favorite ones, today, we wanted to focus on one that is close to our hearts – Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.

With the game coming to GOG.COM during our Anniversary event, we wanted to take a trip down memory lane to look at what made this game so spectacular.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain tells an epic story
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain takes place in Nosgoth, a fantasy world filled with humans and vampires. In this world, pillars are tied to the literal health of the world. The Pillars of Nosgoth are protected by humans, but prior to your introduction to the world, some bad things (to put it mildly) have happened, and now vampires are being hunted down.

Of course, the remaining vampires didn’t like this very much and retaliated, killing many of the guardians. One thing led to another as revenge plot after revenge plot takes place, eventually causing the Pillars and their guardians to become corrupted.

This is where you, Kain (voiced by Simon Templeman), come in. After being resurrected, you are tasked with putting an end to these corrupted guardians in order to, hopefully, bring order back to the world of Nosgoth.

So, as you can see, if you are a fan of big stories, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain definitely has you covered!

Hack n’ slash, puzzle-solving goodness
While a great story can be enough to carry a game, thankfully, Legacy of Kain also excels in classic action-adventure gaming, fighting, and puzzle-solving!

Using a top-down perspective, you’ll explore large outdoor areas and crawl your way through dungeons, exploring, fighting off creatures and humans, and collecting new weapons and armor that change up your gameplay.

And because you are a vampire, your health will continuously (but slowly) decrease the longer you go without blood. You can top up your health meter by taking out humans and creatures with red blood, but make sure to avoid the tainted black blood because it will poison you!

In addition to plenty of weapons to choose from, you will also get some valuable spells to dispatch your enemies. Then, on top of that, you can even shapeshift into a couple of different forms to help with your quest.

Journey into the big world of Legacy of Kain
If you like top-down action games or just want something with an epic story and world-building, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain could be exactly what you are looking for. It features a memorable story and characters and provides plenty of exploration and action for people that prefer that.

On top of that, you can celebrate GOG’s 13th anniversary with us by playing a true classic making a comeback on modern PCs.

What do you think? Plan on checking this game out now that it is on GOG.COM? Let us know down in the comments!

Thanks for taking the time to explain!

Dogmaus: Good that it's patched, but, this work had already been done by modders for free, right?
I'd get it if they manage to make it multilang and on sale for about 1 euro. I'm not in a urge to hand my money to a corporation that exploits vulnerable people with loot boxes for an over-priced game just because it was missing until now.
By the way, if you like a 2D isometric gothic game with vampires check out Vampire's Fall: Origins. It has strong Kain vibes and looks like a lot of fun, I've played a little on Android but I don't like touch controls and small screen for a game of this kind.
I really don't want to spoil your fun, just ask yourself if you feel compelled to get it just because you need to compulsory complete the series here or will you really enjoy it and don't you feel it's overpriced when the rest of the games are here for 1 euro.

kud13: You also need to wait for proper moon phases to unlock several doors in order to obtain 100% completion, so that definitely adds to it.
avatar
Dogmaus: yep, beating a game and exploring every nook and cranny of it are two separate things.
Which overpriced game with loot boxes?
If you're talking about Activision, they aren't listed as a publisher on this release.

Red Fury: Big hit there!
I'd be thrilled, if I hadn't been utterly disappointed by the last 3 years here. At least.
same, but not just by GOG but by the industry in general, its policies toward people and their internal culture of abuse.
Recently seeing people here thanking Activision for finally selling a Raven game, when they are the very corporation that has killed Raven studio and turned it into a name that mass produces CoDs, makes me wonder if gamers, expeciallyin the GOGosphere, live with their head under the sand. The same Activision that killed Sierra and Blizzard and now sells their legacy for way too much without having contributed anything to them. Yes, thanks.

Sorry, when you said "overpriced" I didn't think of mobile games. Those are pretty universally garbage, with few exceptions.

fortune_p_dawg: yes, activation limit this time. i think 5 is the limit then you'll have to call silicon knights for them to give u more activations.

I'm all for dogpiling on shitty corporations, but the bolded part is simply not true. Sierra - the ACTUAL Sierra, the oldskool point&click factory, not the shambling zombie entity carrying its name, was a goner loooooong before Activision came into the picture. Actually, it was French media company Havas that pulled the plug on Yosemite Entertainment (which was what Sierra's original office was called at the time) in early 1999.

And as for "now sells their legacy for way too much without having contributed anything to them" - that's true, but that's hardly exclusive to Activision. I'd say that's the case for at least 60% of the games sold here.
Nice. Didn't expect this one to ever pop up here due to its rights entanglement.

I missed this game, so happy to finally see it here. :)

Robette: "...expansive world containing more than 100 hours of intense, blood-sucking, spell-casting gameplay."

What? Is there one zero too many?
avatar
MarianFA: IGN's review says 50 to 70 hours of gameplay.
avatar
Robette: I haven't played it, but howlongtobeat says it takes 12-15 hours, and I usually find that website relatively accurate.
HLTB has one single report for this game saying 9h. Meanwhile gamefaq's statistics show 1-4h...
Apparently it has some ridiculous number of locations (most of them probably useless) so I guess it's the case where it's either very long when you play blindly or extremely short when you know what to do.

Maybe I should have used one more comma :) When I said overpriced, I meant Blood Omen. For this same price, Squeenix is selling Final Fantasy VII (2013) on Steam right now. And as this is not a remaster, I don't see why a 1996 game costs more than the other titles in the series, while being older. Other than using the hype because it was missing for a long time.

Insta boycotted. Thanks GOG, I was really looking forward to this day, and I can't even enjoy it because you stuffed your heads up your hind quarters with DRM on Hitman.

Whenever I start the game, I hear running water but a black screen. I can bypass that but when I try to start the actual game, some menus just freeze. when I do manage to get in game, he's just swiping his sword nonstop at the bar and I cant move. no controller plugged in.

TheCleaner517: I swear there's always one of yall here....

Not to mention it's 7$, atleast where I am. It's already discounted. You won't get a better price. You that cheap? Lol.
There is more than one of us.

And it is $8.99 AUD for me, and only 10% off which isn't much.
I'm not complaining, and I'm not emotionally buying either.
I've got the others in the series, and like I said, I wouldn't be playing it any time soon.

If you are happy with the current price go for it, but it isn't priced to be an instabuy for me.

I can wait for it to be cheaper on a sale as it inevitably will be eventually. I'm in no hurry.

Enjoy!
I voted with my wallet. I just bought this game.

I have the retail version with 3rd party fixes already installed and running on my old Windows XP retro-gaming machine, but I gladly swap playing this version instead. I recall that other version had some issue on Windows 7 with NVidia GPU, it wouldn't show the road signs for some reason (while they showed fine when playing on e.g. Intel HD Graphics...). Maybe this version does...
