BleepBl00p: Those with a critical opinion call it bland and generic. The real classics dont get such harsh critical reviews.
Ah, I see. So you hand-wave away any opinion that differs from yours as being uncritical, 'young', or just uninformed. Discussion over, then.

BleepBl00p: But these games are objectively bad if you analyse them.
avatar
Enebias: Please, provide the objective parameters on which you base your conclusions.
I will be more than willing to agree with you if you provide me at least a few examples of games measured with the International Standard scale of Awesome™.
For RPGs the main point would be the writing. None of the listed games have quality writing. PoE straight up has bad English in it that English teachers confirmed to be bad. If this isnt objective enough then I dont know what is.

Those who write critical reviews of said games.

I see. Despite most reviews being 4 or above stars and saying such things as "BioWare's latest masterpiece sets the epic adventure bar high. " (IGN), its pretty much just about you disliking the game then?

How about some examples? Just links so I know what to read.

But thats a major shill review. Im talking about actual reviews by gamers, not paid reviewers.

Cant tell if you're being sarcastic by citing IGN.

I could say "bull" and make you notice that the great RPGs of old focused on character builds and turn/stat-based combat.
A proper RPG can have no story but solid mechanics.
That is, unless the New Geneva Convention finally approved my International Standard Scale of Awesome™.
Also, I think "quality writing" is an almost entirely subjective matter as long as the writer masters an idiom.
(EDIT: I suppose that the bad English in PoE is backer-made content. On that I could agree, some stories were indeed not gramatically sound. Still, we are talking about developers and not backers who had a treat here)
For example, I believe the writing in Elex is very solid.

Objectively DAO is pretty mediocre compared to most RPGs, characters are unlikable, combat is like single-player MMO, character system is too simplified, the main reason it's so liked is because it came out in the middle of the mid-2000's "Dark Age" of Computer RPGs where the genre almost seemed like it died, so the game seemed good because there was so little competition.

I agree with everythign besides "objectively".
I despise Dragon Age (the whole series), still it is only my judgement and I have no scientific standard to value the intrinsic quality of a game.
For some it is the greatest game ever made. As long as it does not impede others in some way, I say let everyone have the fun they prefer.

No, really, what is the point of opening a thread like this?
What's the point of registering JUST to create a thread like this?
It's completely stupid. People will always have different opinions about games and imo there are no "good" or "bad" games. There are only games which I enjoy or which I don't enjoy. This whole discussion is senseless imo.

No one cares that you're an over-opinionated raging nerd.

Linko90: Doom 3 is still widely talked about each Halloween season, as well as its impact of tech thanks to the engine the game was used to showcase.
...unfortunately though GOG is not offering the ORIGINAL DOOM 3 - just saying ;)

If you want an objective review of DAO just browse GOG or Steam, pick the longest negative review from someone who has enough vocabulary to describe in-game flaws and its all there. Crosmando did a pretty good resume too.

And the bad English in PoE was in the core game, all over the place, from the introduction sequence until the end. I still remember the writer breaking some very basic writing rule like the narrator must never announce himself (learned that in early high school, breaking that rule would penalize our essays).

The funny thing is that I consider myself a pretty opinionated person. In general.

And then... These threads. People raging over... a curation list ? a frontpage design ? a writing style ?

How... how do they manage to care THAT MUCH about that stuff ? How does it work.

RAARGH MY FRYING PAN'S HANDLE IS AT AN ANGLE, THIS IS A JOKE, WHY ARE SUCH FRYING PAN DESIGNS EVEN ALLOWED, FRYING PAN'S HANDLES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PERFECTLY HORIZONTAL, EVERYTHING IS GOING TO SHIT, I CANNOT BARE THIS WORLD ANYMORE, AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON FLAT SHOELACES !

Oh wait.

Yeah, there. Half the gog forums should be merged in that thread.
