kusumahendra: Since you're still in college you'll be using office a lot. Most likely Ms Word to make report. Ms Office doesn't play nicely on Linux and while LibreOffice is a nice replacement, it still doesn't create MS documents properly (usually problem with formatting). If your college requires you to use MS format document, you better use Windows than anything else.
Honestly, if the college requires the use of MS document format, I won't suggest a college student to use anything else other than Windows. IMO Windows is a good product. It just has a bit problem with security, virus and too many unused-by-regular-person feature. Well, the last addition of ads is dumb though
zeogold: Call me stupid, but I didn't know Microsoft Office wouldn't run on anything but Windows. I assumed it was like any other application and you could run it on any system. Don't take me wrong. I don't discourage you to give Linux a try. I just remind you to be wise, if you still have a use with Windows, don't nuke it :)
btw, no. app won't run in any OS. A mac application won't run on windows unless get ported (usually developer target multiplatform, and make his software available by providing binaries for each OS). Safari, OSX default browser is made available for Windows a few years ago. But I'm not aware Linux version is available. Running windows application on Mac and Linux is a bit easier because of wine (yes, there is wine for Mac). It is application from Linux that usually easier to port because most of the source code is openly available and they use open standard.
