doccarnby: While the multi-part files can be annoying, the reason they're split up is so that you don't start downloading a 25gig file, have your internet crap out 3/4ths of the way through, and you have to download the entire thing again. It is, in fact, to make things easier on the user, not some subtle effort to push Galaxy, and has been a thing since as long as I've been here.
I thought the reason they were split up is because 4GB is the maximum file size allowed by FAT32, which is commonly used on removable media because of its wide cross platform support.
Personally, I wouldn't mind if installers were consolidated into single large files since I have no real use for FAT32 any more and my browser is capable of resuming downloads if the transfer gets interrupted.
