So after a long period of digging around in (late) 20th century avant garde music, mostly Schnittke, Lutoslawski and Bartok, I had a little throwback to older times.

And was Subsequently rather mindblown :D

I started listening to it on a recommendation by my grandfather, who sang in a local choir and did some small polyphonic pieces every now and then, but I'm rather new to it and would like to beg some advice on were to start?

I know of Ockegem, Striggio, Tallis, Gabrieli and De Manchicourt, but I was wondering wether someone could add to the list?

If you know a great recording, I should very much like to hear of it! (I thus far only have "Utopia Triumphans" and a recording of Striggio's 40/60 part mass)

I am mostly interested in choral pieces, but folk songs or dances or music are also very welcome!

It's slightly more recent than what you are looking for, but you might want to look at fugues from the Baroque era (and onward).

Do you have any particular ones in mind? I know Bach wrote some rather impressive ones (as in, unmatched), but I know virtually nothing about the music from that epoch (not of composers or remarkable pieces); I have never really delved into it and it has in the past mostly failed to capture my attention...

I know Pachelbel's Canon and Vivaldi's seasons from my childhood, and while they are of course, undeniably, beautiful pearls of music, they somehow fail to be of much interest to me compared to some of the far rougher stuff in my collection (matter of preference I guess).

I'm always open for suggestions however!
