JakobFel: Okay then, I'll add 5 to the list hahaha. I'm definitely interested in giving that series a go, possibly moreso than any others, given their massive acclaim.

Green_Hilltop: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 1+2 is great, I recommend those. They also utilize a job system where you learn skills from weapons. I didn't like FFT for PSX though, but I liked FFTA - they are not connected storywise in any way btw.
Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark is a nice indie game that plays very similarly, and it's even on GOG!

Note that these games are Strategy RPGs; there's not much non-combat gameplay, and the combat gameplsy plays like a turn-based strategy game (complete with a grid), except that each unit you can field is a character who can earn experience points, level up, and keep those gains into the next battle.

These games also have a nice job/ability system, where you can change jobs (though Fell Seal calls them "classes"), and then equip abilities from other jobs that you've previously learned, leading to quite a variety of ways to set up a unit.

(For clarity, Final Fantasy 5 is *not* an SRPG; however, it actually does have a similar job/ability system.)

I'll second this recommendation. Fell Seal is basically a love letter to the original FFT, and managed to pretty much nail everything that was good about the original while smoothing out rough edges and adding some modern quality of life features. A bit of a different experience from JRPGs, but a great game in its own right.

One really neat feature of Fell Seal is the difficulty customization. You can, for example, give enemies high stats and more equipment, but disable the injury system (where characters who die have penalties to stats unless they sit out a battle) and not allow enemies to revive each other. I wish more games would have this sort of granular difficulty setting.
a game such as wizardry you can't go wrong with, good 'ol first person dungeon crawling

not to expensive either
Nowadays I'm more inclined to western RPGs, since most JRPGs relies too much on their samey storytelling (I don't care about artstyle, but the way the story is told seems too repetitive). When I was younger and the stories were fresh to me, I liked them though.
But there's an exception, Dragon's Dogma, one of my favorites RPGs (either Japanese or western).
Great combat, dungeon design, setting, ambiance. I was really surprised when I played it.

I didn't realize Fell Seal was a JRPG, I've had that on my wishlist for a bit. I'll definitely check it out! As for the Wizardry game on the list, I certainly aim to check that out as I have 6-8 thanks to the giveaway they did on Twitch Prime way back when.

From what I've seen, that's one of the larger issues that keeps me from them. I've been hearing a lot of recommendations for Dragon's Dogma so that's absolutely one I'll be grabbing at some point, thanks!
