Warupt: Let's hope GOG finally launches Linux version of GOG Galaxy so we could get achievements, time tracking and cloud saving support there aswell.
I'd very much rather have linux support and more games supporting cloud saving instead of having a launcher that could launch games from every store...
thought linux fanatics hate achievements cause it is drm or something and telemetry

what i dont get why is it so hard to make a proper installer for win app in linux
click select install exe ok and bamm get the start icon , is this too much to ask for?

.....

it is appealing ! though i don't see me using the trackpads for total war or other rts styled games , where i also wonder about how much tension this device will attract in the used muscle groups....

Breja: Hardly. Any PC games you can reasonably play with a controller are console games as well. No one's going to buy this to discover Fallout, Disciples and Starcraft.

You can hook this to a monitor and play sit-down PC games on it with K+M as per the IGN preview, similar to Switch's docking. This duals as a mini-PC and a handheld. No reason why you can't discover those games with this device, with a bit of modding on for Brood War.

fronzelneekburm: Lol, kinda makes me glad I paid $75 for a Chinese handheld that lets me play any of the 10 billion ROMS floating around the internet*. Hell, it even has SCUMMVM and DOSBOX support. I was able to play the gog version of Blade Runner right out of the box, just by placing the folder on a MicroSD card. Apparently, if you have the right firmware, you can also play Half-Life on it..

*And most of those are probably better suited for a handheld than the crap I own on Steam
Not very accurate comparing apples with oranges.

SteamOS and Proton are being optimized to handle games and the Deck also has microSD card compartment to upgrade storage size. They're in different leagues in terms of specs, so the premium you're paying for lets you play modern PC games like the ones demo'd (e.g., Control, Death Stranding, etc.). That's why this device is compared to the Switch, Xbox One S, and PS4 to gauge performance and value. I'm confident with some modding that people will emulate the same ROM library as your Chinese handheld with better performance.

looks heavy and bulky
I'm more concerned about repair ability , those stick will probably break easily
not that i would buy one of this , still those who are interested should wait a half year for reviews

i would have take it apart into
1 part base
1 part screen
1 part controller
would be more cheaper modular

yes, i just finished watching the whole video, some things i noticed was the bent over posture used when displaying the handheld in action, or leaned back with the device on the knees for both situations. personally i would be interested in having such a device just to use it when sitting out side or during a relaxing holiday ( oke relaxing and gaming might be debatable to some ) it seems that the pc will remain the preferred apparatus of choice since it would be ridiculous in my situation ( i have a 7,2 teraflop card ) .. or to spend that amount of money...

you think so? they seemed similar as the sticks used on a regular controller

Interesting how many people already behave like this thing is new definitive standard in gaming world. There is no reason why GOG shouldn't have galaxy for linux but saying they should do it here and now particularly because valve is releasing another experiment which will likely end as niche gadget and abandoned year later like it was with their previous "revolutionary" inventions sounds silly.

rojimboo: No. What we need is more exposure, hype and gamers to drive more development, support and awesome gaming on linux. This makes my gaming experience better. And I never even have to touch PUBG or the like. Just let Valve do the work, take it, for free, and go happily on your merry way. Thx GabeN.
Naw.

One of the reasons a lot of Linux versions don't get released here/DRM-free is because they use Steam-proprietary libraries that have questionable licensing and developers won't release them here, even when they do Windows versions. This would only make that worse; another Trojan Horse lock-in feature. And my initial reply was specifically about the garbage of kernel-level anti-cheat, which is an disgusting cost no matter how many people it might bring to try using a Linux device.

ssling: snip
Likely they won't consider Galaxy Linux for at least a couple quarters to see how this well this sells first before going through with it.

DoomSooth: You're going to give money to Valve so you can run things from GOG?
I just preordered one specifically to do that.

I own a shit ton of JRPGs on GOG that were natively setup for console controls & do not remotely stress PC hardware since they were developed for PS2/Vita grade equipment.

The idea of being able to take games like that on the go, DRM free and without having to worry about console suppliers shutting off my access to the games I already paid for, is highly appealing to me.

Valve isn't even the forerunner of this concept: there are already a couple other companies that makes hand held gaming PCs ... They are just more expensive, lower spec, and run on stock Windows/Linux OS installs that have no optimization.
70% chance it will be abandoned after 4 months on the market. Just like the rest of there hardware ventures.
I don't trust steam, and that goes double for steamOS. A laptop + controller is better anyway.

Especially if you happen to have very big pockets...
the good news is that you can install a windows OS and play gog games on it.

But why? Proton/Wine would make that redundant, and you'd gain nothing.
He is doing it all wrong.

I detest playing FPS games with a gamepad, but one thing I've learned so far is that console/gamepad FPS gamers don't aim with the same method as mouse gamers, ie. moving the aim freely.

Instead, they fix it at a correct height, and then try to aim horizontally by strafing.

So that XBox gamer in that video should have been sidestepping over and over again, trying to get the aim right. :)
