rampancy: Here's the thing to remember. They're a business, and that means that their first priority is (and always has been) making money, and growing the company and its customer base. So far, over the past few years, they've been able to find a way to successfully turn a profit and grow their business by aligning their business practices with our interests as GOG's core audience.

But if they can continue to turn a sustainable profit and grow the business in a way that diverges from our interests (with an acceptable level of negative consequences), then I'm sure they'll pursue it. That's important especially now with their traditional avenues of growth (strictly DRM-free classic games) starting to dry up.

In other words, they're not "pro-indie". They're pro-profit. GOG only cares about your loyalty in as much as it keeps you buying from their store. For now at least, the community's interests have aligned with GOG's business goals and we've considered them worthy of the community's loyalty.

Regardless of the game's quality, if the all-knowing MBAs and market analysts at GOG don't think Starward Rogue is going to make them a significant amount of money, they're not going to care. And it won't matter how wrong they may actually be.
Well said.
Let's also remember that Arcen admitted they gave GoG a version which lacked many features. They admit they rolled the dice and may have lost for that reason. They are up to a little over 4,000 copies sold on Steam in a week and a half. More than Fall of the Dungeon Guardians sold in 3 months including 2 months before X-Mas (3,700), so maybe there is some hope. Not sure what it means but Starward Rogue is at #12 in "Trending Now on Steam" on SteamSpy.

IIRC, they showed GOG a very early Alpha or Beta build of the game, did they not? If it was very early in development, it may explain why GOG turned them down while accepting other in-development games like Crawl (and I can't even remember now how long it's been "Coming Soon").

I'm not ruling out GOG eventually getting Starward Rogue, but it's not something I'm holding my breath for. In the meantime, I'm hoping someone like Jim Sterling or TB can help get this game the spotlight it deserves.

They didn't specify exactly, but from the sound of it, it wasn't nearly complete at that point.

Feels like at least a year... Popped up, TBA, and... never went anywhere.

Considering how quickly they pulled and made Starward Rogue, it's not a big surprise. But depending on how long it takes for legal agreements to get in place and them trying to get approval probably a month or two in advance for the release... Then they MUST have seen the earliest of versions with bare minimum functionality.

I do hope SR comes to GoG...

Well they made an created a full featured, mostly bug free (mostly fixed now), fun game in three months time. Which is kind of an achievement in itself. This is also the reason why they couldn't show the full game to gog until release. Hell the final graphical overlay for bullets, mechs and other environmental effects was uploaded on launch day and no tester had seen it before. But I think gog could have given them some slack, especially with how good their reputation is.
At least there is one good thing in all this situation. The game will come with more features then it would have on release. Already a few new enemy units have been added, game engine upgraded (for better controller support) and a few new bosses were added.
