onarliog: All right... As a Japanese-style shmup purist I don't usually enjoy this sort of thing. I've also watched the gameplay videos by devs, and just by looking at the way they move their character and trivial bullet patterns they have trouble dodging, it is obvious that they are not very familiar with playing shmups, so it is questionable they'd be able to design a good one.
Actually you're kind of right that the core Arcen developers/programmers are not very good at playing shmups, and they are well aware of that so they did not design the bulk of the enemies and bullet patterns on their own. Instead of trying to magically become shmup designers themselves, they brought on-board a "shmup fanatic" to design and balance that portion of the game (username "Misery" on their forums), and they built the base game such that new enemies and bullet patterns could be added with minimal programming so the specialist could focus exclusively on that aspect of the game.
In addition to that, they also took contributions during alpha/beta, so some additional content was contributed during testing.
The final game still allows for the addition of new enemies, bullet patterns, and rooms, which I suppose would considered "modding" now that the game is out.
