I know this isn't on GOG, but since this game has been freeware for a while, I was wondering: does anybody still play it? Is it still worth downloading?

And, if so, what are some recommended mods to get it up to modern standards (without losing the game's soul)?

Despite a huge amount of lore and backstory in the Tribes franchise that I believe is more interesting that Mass effect lore, the games never reached mainstream success.

The Tribes campaign is very short and a sequel bait. You can download and play if you want but it is forgettable.

That's a shame. And, being multiplayer-focused shooters, the lack of mainstream success sounds like it really hurt their long term appeal (hence the fact that Youtubers like LGR and GManLives never bothered to revisit it). I'd hate to download and mod Tribes 1 only to find that nobody is playing it even on the fan-made community servers.

Perhaps it's still worth a shot, though, being a big fan of mid-late 90's PC gaming. And, hey, it's free! So what do I have to lose except time?

People totally still play it online, goto playt1.com and download the game pre-setup for windows 7+ to play online. Do it now. Also the website has a discord if you want where you can talk to other people that play tribes.
