txnca: How are you coming up with that?
As I said before - I have psychic powers! ;-P

Jokes aside, round three follows a pattern of games coming up in pairs based on the order games came up in round two.

For example, in round two Time Commando was followed by Evil Genius and that was the order the games came up in round three. Interstate '76 Arsenal was followed by Legend of Grimrock, so if the pattern holds up, that's what should come up next.

Pidgeot: Yes, I have a script running to generate these texts whenever the game changes and then copy the text to my clipboard (while also logging it for when I'm away). All I have to do is paste it into a new post.
avatar
mrkgnao: What is the script written in? What URL does it access? Because if I look at the HTML of the front page, I don't see the current sale details (e.g. no "Interstate" at the moment).
It's a simple piece of Javascript that's running inside the browser and monitoring the elements on the page (which are being refreshed by GOG's own script). When it sees the counter reset, it generates the text and copies it to the clipboard.

All the browsers have built-in developer consoles these days; that's an easy way to add scripts like this to a page without additional infrastructure.

Apprentice wizard. I taught him we'll...

epictime: Seriously? Then why don't I have any messages from you? I hope it isn't my fault...
Check your messages now, a code for Pid is there :)

So that's how it works! I sure wondered how he knew Grimrock was coming next!

On the busy first day the site commonly threw login requests on trying to buy, even if one was otherwise logged in. I guess thats what was happening to don, sucks to lose a freebie from it. Try ignoring the login prompt and just ctrl-f5 if youre sure you are already logged in.

There is a pattern, games drop in pairs, we only know what the *next* game is going to be and only ~50% of the time.
I do love me some Interstate, but it's got the same problem Duke Nukem has. I already own it several times over!

This wizard?

"Oh yeah, aight. Aight, I put on my robe and wizard hat."

Thanks. I seem to remember someone speaking about it last night, but then that was last night!

deleuz: I'm just glad FMV gaming died. These were not good games, imho, they just dazzled people by how many CDs they could ship. Bad acting, bad fmv, boring/bizarre puzzles, lackluster story, horrendous UI. In some ways, I think 7th Guest and 11th Hour are far more "dated" than games like Wasteland or Starflight.
avatar
grimgroove: Not the greatest fan of FMV gaming either, mind you, and it definitely doesn't have its place in today's new game racks. But it does have a place in gaming history and I don't think its fair to crefer to FMV-gaming as if it were a genre, because it isn't. Some games using FMV were bad, some of them were good. Granted, the good ones were rarely good because of their FMV and rather despite of it, but still. A good FMV game that springs to mind is the second game in the Gabriel Knight series.
And while the acting is often lackluster, it can be enjoyable just because of that. In the case of The 7th Guest it wasn't so appalling as to pull me out of the game, but it was funny in some cases.
You're spot on with that analazis. A clear FMV game I remember playing was Angel Devoid. I really liked it though.

don2712: No, it would be top of my shelf if I had it plus, I wasn't logged in so there is no way I could have grabbed it or they could have known who I was, in fact as I wasn't logged in it probably shouldn't have happened at all. It wasn't sleep deprivation hallucinating because there only a couple of titles I wanted plus I have so many games I have not yet played I decided not to lose sleep this time around over a couple of games. After I clicked buy the game picture turned to grey the price said zero underneath it said zero - free. I was interested in the game but, unsure about it as I'm not good at those types of games so free would have been a good price for me lol.
It never actually went to the checkout screen it stayed on the main countdown screen but the screen picture changed.

deleuz: Your experience is puzzling in that it's different from every other account I've seen (including my own personal experience.)

Clicking buy when not logged in results in me being brought to the login screen. When I "won" Shadowrun for free, I was not logged in, I was forced to log in before I saw that I had won the game. On the very screen where you are shown that you've won the game, it shows the account name of the account that the game has been added to.
I was never taken to the log in screen, that is what is so strange in fact I have never logged my tablet into GOG because I prefer to use my desktop.

I understand. While waiting for your answer, I was indeed looking at the console and figured out that the source code page (ctrl-U on Firefox) displays only part of the source, based on the state of the console. If I dig down to the "game__price-save" div and open it, the info appears on the source page, if I do not (i.e. just load the page without opening the console and expanding the div hierarchy) it does not. Curious.

Thanks.

P.S. Just figured out that "http://www.gog.com/springinsomnia/ajax/getCurrentOffer" has all the info.

The 11th Hour.
Argh, thanks for pointing out my blindness, my only defence is that I haven't finished my first (glass of icy) coffee yet ;-P

This is some really unique experience you had there - in a not good way, that is. Something must have glitched on GOG's side, otherwise you should have been taken to the next screen and asked to login. So sorry you missed the freebie, sadly I don't have a spare code to sooth your disappointment.
