Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

ahab: You only have leg to stand on if one of the last chance deals comes back in this sale
Not really.

"200 left" "Buy now"

kidding

"400 left" "Buy now"

kidding

"500 left" "Buy now"

even without the "last chance", which may be new, this is still prying on those mentalities.
In the end, I was able to buy some games I've wanted to play since I was a kid with an 80% discount as well as getting two or three free games in the bargain.

I don't know what you guys are complaining about. Sure, the actual promo could be different, but how can you argue with 80% discounts? If you don't like the game that's on offer, don't buy it.

amok: "Border on" lying. It do not matter if they say it in a post - the front page says "XXX left. Last chance! Buy now".

Since I knew there are repeats, then I am not going straight out saying lying, but .... "Last chance"? not really. Anyway, you may like them, that's fine. I think it is dirty sales tactics meant to pray on some of the less finer aspects human nature - we do not want to miss out.
It says "Last Chance" now because it is the last chance within this promo. They did 3 repeats and the first 2 did not say "last chance". The promo announcement clearly indicates games may show up multiple times and they did. It was kind of them to put "Last Chance" on this final run so now people who have been following along know that this is the last chance for each of the games as they pass by - they wont be repeated again. If someone has been waiting for a game and it's been repeated 3 times already then they can go to bed as it's not returning in the promo.

Promotions are designed to generate interest in products, and all promotions done by any store ever for any product uses tactics that will draw people's interest. Things like lowering prices for example. Ideas such as "They just lowered the price as a malicious attempt to get people to buy it!" is silly because it's the entire point of why any company puts anything on sale to begin with, it's not an underhanded shady trick, it's the whole point! LOL

If you didn't like the promo however, and that's perfectly ok because not everyone is going to appreciate it, I would recommend writing support and articulating what you liked and did not like about the promo. Gog pays attention to what people say and based on people's feedback it will no doubt help them to create better promos in the future which more closely align with their customer expectations.

Keep in mind too this is just one rather experimental promo they're doing to try something different. There are more promos around the corner and they aren't all going to be to everyone's fancy every single time. ;o)

Briareos262: heh, had to take a quicke nap, my whole body is still tired of waiting for the good sales....mostly just Don't Starve ATM.

Anywho yeah my first system was Atari, it was great at the time. However the NES just blew it out of the water after it came out I remember after the Atari video game crash age. I too had sadly sold my NES a few years later after it was bought. Luckily I rebought again right before there were gonna move on to SNES. OMG SNES was like a renaissance again for the videogame era. great times great times =)

Oh yeah the Neo Geo that was insane I remember drooling over that console wanting to get it in my younger days, however the home console and the carts were uber expansive. System was like $500-600 and carts ranged from $150-200+ at the time. !t was way too rich for me and still never gotten around to getting one. Even the Neo Geo Pocket I missed too =( which I recall was alot cheaper and games too.

CorranHorn: Heard people mentioning the Atair but I never got one, I did however get an Atari 520 ST after a friend of mine showed me Maniac Mansion, many good games came to that system.

Also got an Amiga 500, I remember when people had the same arguments about Amiga and Atari as the one we are seeing now on Sony vs Microsoft (and Sega vs Nintendo, makes the whole Microsoft vs Sony thing look lame).
I, too, had an Amiga 500 (later even with the 1MB memory expansion, woot!) and I was guilty in bringing it down... I had 2 original copies of games, all the others of my endless collection were pirated. That's why I don't pirate anymore. I felt guilty when the Amiga went down...

dhrverbruggen: IMO they are not lying.. They told us there would be repeats.. read there post
''The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once''

I found the sale fun so far i got all the games i wanted and is was fun to see this forum got so big :)
One of the biggest problems with this sale was GOG's assertion that the only way to make these deep discounts possible was to limit the number of licences sold. This would not be problematic in its own right, were it not for the fact many of the games that were heavily discounted had already been in bundles and have already been subject to similar reductions on Steam and other platforms in the past.

It's quite possible that this marks the start of a new trend in digital distribution - it's been common knowledge for a while now that publishers and developers have been rather unhappy with the deep discount mentality in PC gaming - but the implication that the only way to get these publishers to agree to these discounts was to limit quantities is very misleading when it has been demonstrated that most of these games have seen similar discounts before with unlimited quantities.

In my opinion, this PR stunt was really less about the ability to negotiate discounts with publishers than it was to demonstrate to publishers that limiting supply can create the same effect as daily deals without the effect of sucking the potential future market dry. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this model gradually became the norm on other platforms.

how long has thunderscape been going now? GOG you really should of put small numbers of games up for the last round, been a great sale but this last round has been poorly thought out
avatar
Russonc: I thought this promo was fun (in a sick, addicting way). Unsure why some people are mad at a chance to get games cheaper than normal, but anyone was able to buy any GOG game at full price for last couple of days as well, so I'm not sure why the complaints. Other than wasting a good bit of my work production the last 2 days..... Good luck all on the 3rd round!
It are not the good games for the cheap but the one nobody wants people are getting mad about. It's like sale in the supermarket and before you can buy your cans of milk for cheap you have to buy 200 pounds of poo.

Would you not have gotten the same games in a normal 80% discount sale, which may last 2 days (as this have), but with the option to buy the game you want when you want. Read about the games on offer, see what they are like, instead of hovering on the front page hoping that a game you want may pop up next time?

But then hovering on the front page does bring up the timer going down with the words "200 left" "Buy now"....

OMG I love Maniac Mansion, I still have it for the C64. Yeah I remember some variations of the Atari systems. My cousin had the Atari 5200 and I remember my aunt sledgehammering that poor system later on because he played it too much or something. The Atari ST and Amiga system really looked awesome at its time, tho sadly never gotten to play any games from them.

I dunno, the market for Thunderpants is shrinking pretty small right about now. ;oP

CorranHorn: Super Mario Bors was the game that made me want a NES that and Ice Climber. Got Ice Hockey and played it with a friend of mine, it was a blast=).

Yes I know that, thx anyway=).
avatar
Briareos262: Heh, I too played those, they were great, gosh so many sleepless fun nights I had with Mario Bros. Ice climber was fun too. I played quite a bit of that. The one that got me most was Legend of Zelda and Dragon Warrior, so many timesink hours i had put into those and probably finished them a good many times over ^_^
Legend of Zelda I played before I got a NES, never bought it but I did borrow Zelda on SNES and that is the reason I still want to play all those Zelda games. I also borrowed Super Metroid and imho it´s one of the best console games I ever played.

Donkey Kong Country made me a Rare fan and it´s so sad to see that Rare today isn´t the Rare I liked as a kid.

Yes, we could always want a more comfortable sale with better discounts, more freebies, more games and whatever. But this is what GOG is trying out his time and I think it is pretty good.
It brought many new people to the site, it was entertaining and I personally found 80% off to be a quite good discount.
But yes, we can complain and want more! ALWAYS!

No. "Last chance" only appeared on the third run, starting with yesterday evening's RotT. There's no lying involved whatsoever unless you think "last chance" is intended to falsely imply the games are disappearing off GOG (in which case you're wrong, too). If there's be a fourth run, sure, go ahead and call them liars. If games were discounted deeper on subsequent runs, then you could have some basis to call the sale exploitative*. Not as it is now.

*And you know what? GOG doesn't earn any money from the folks glued to the screen. With a user's individual choice to wait for a discount, you lose money (unless you're having fun or are a kid, in the latter case your parents are being idiots) and so does GOG. For them, it would be better if you the individual user disregarded the sale and bought the game they wanted at full price.

Also, your spelling is abnormally atrocious today, please go and have some sleep.

Khaleesia87: I think I will be able to finish season 5 of Breaking Bad before Thunderscape: Die Hard is sold out LOL

I spent most of my time with Jack Keane, Eador: Keane Returns, Book of Unwritten Tales: What Doesn't Keane You Makes You Stronger etc by watching this season.

Obviously I almost finished the series.
avatar
Cardian: There are definitely worse ways to spend your Keane time. But be careful, if Thunderkeane ends before you finish the final season, you might not want to stop watching and miss all the real deals.
I can stop the video whenever I want so no big deal =D I am loving this season so much but I paused a few times already to record my baby budgie speaking his first words....I don't know why but he decided to become talkative during this promo..

a coincidence? don't think so.
