Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****
****NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY PERSON

Let's try to guess how many copies of "Neverwinter Nights 2" will be available.

I'm thinking 1000.

nijuu: rough guesses how long it will take for 60 copies to clear?
as long as it takes :P

Knofbath: Still waiting on "Neverwinter Nights 2" and "System Shock 2".
Someone earlier said that the SS2 free giveaway earlier today stated it was Last Chance. I haven't seen anyone else corroborate that though, and I don't recall seeing it (but it flashed by pretty damned quick).

Sorry, what were the past 5 games? I had to drive home =(

MGShogun: Volunteering is only 3 hours per day so I'm sure you can still do a lot of stuff.

I usually get super super super early shift so I can check the rest of the stuff for the day.

I rarely sleep during SDCC but that's the sacrifice that one has to made if one want to have a lot of fun. :DDD

Briareos262: Thanks I will definitely go one of these days.....if I can ever pay off my one credit card debt I have which I would have never gotten myself into...however I needed a car to get to work =( I had to have at least one plastic card to survive on =P
Gotcha. Just hit me up if you want to go to SDCC. It's insane how SDCC is so ridiculously popular and the tickets sold out so quickly. That goes for the volunteering as well.

TraderVic: Hey guys, did Tex Murphy already go for this day/night? Thanks in advance. :)

Btw. I helped the common cause by getting the Blackwell Bundle. No no, no need to thank me, I'm a good Samaritan.
avatar
Briareos262: sorry about the loss of Tex. The Blackwell games are actually good however on the bright side.
No worries, mate. If I'm being sane for a moment, I already have WAY too many games unplayed already. It's just that the lure of prices is too much. :D
I'm glad I have a whole night of studying ahead, that way I can keep an eye on the upcoming deals as well.

So far I've bought:
Populous: The Beginning
The Book of Unwritten Tales

I'm definitely hunting for Theme Hospital and I wouldn't mind some Neverwinter Nights.

Too bad that Gothic 1, 2 and Nox were not in the sale list.

When Neverwinter Nights 2 Hit the Insomnia promo it will be vanish in a blink.... no matter how much! no matter the discount.... even when it have as much copys as an cod ghost hase sold! ....

Nah, the giveaways are separate from the sale.

I think 1400. :)

iuliand: So far I don't like this promo for the following reasons:

- first round was insanely fast. I tried to buy King's Bounty Crossworlds but due to the fact the PayPal "pay" button didn't worked on iPhone I couldn't finalize the purchase. The promo ended by the time I wanted to retry.
- the free games are meant to be grabbed by superhumans... I don't even dare to hope at grabbing one. Some free games I would have preferred to be discounted instead in order to have a chance to get them.
- now on the last round I'm still waiting for King's Bounty Crossworlds but seeing how slow some of the games pass I don't think I'll have a chance to get it before I need to go to sleep... I know it's called "insomnia" promo but that doesn't mean I really have to skip the night... I have to sleep.

I simply dislike guarding the site waiting for the next game. Imagine how much time is lost by so many people waiting for their favorite games to come up. It is not a user friendly promo.

wvpr: It went on too long and needed a shutoff valve for the unpopular games. Once everyone had what they wanted from the first couple passes, games stayed up way too long. But it was a fun promo with some very nice discounts. Running it a couple times a year would keep it fresh.
One of the tricks of selling is to find ways to generate interest without losing money.

The basic approach in selling would be to say "we want to sell X at $10 to make a modest profit".

Do that, and they go out of business perhaps, because consumers respond to things like sales. So, instead about about price it at $15, and have occasional 50% off sales to get people excited? That works if not too many are sold at 50% off - if everyone waited for that sale, you wouldn't get the $10 you need. This is related to the 'loss leader' where you may not make money on the sale item, but it pulls in customers who buy other things not on sale.

So what if you wanted to get them even more excited with a $5 price? If you just did it, it might cut too much into profits. So to do it, you need to find a way to limit the quantity sold at $5.

The things you complain about - having to watch the screen - are ways to cut down the number sold, which allows the lower price. They kind of go together.

If you don't want that, then make it a regular sale - but with the higher numbers sold, the discount is reduced.

That's how they also can afford to give away a small number of free copies - paid for by pulling people in who buy things not on sale.

JCPenney recently tried an approach of 'no sales, just everyday low prices', and it bombed. The sales are back.

That's how people tend to respond, and if the seller doesn't play the sale game, they might go out of business.

This is just a sort of creative way of offering larger than normal discounts for limited quantities.
If the next game is 700 copies of Fez I'm going to rage.
Guys i have Both Thief 1 and 2 on Steam already. However i know that GoG usually has better support for older games with special patches and fixes included. Is this the case with the thief series? or do the Steam and GoG versions run the same?

Thank you for that. It's starting to like Jackwell Keanedle at this point.
It is a good game, so it's hard to understand why it's Keaning
