Rat droppings can carry some nasty diseases, so remember to clean up, especially if you have foodstuff. It's not THAT dangerous (I've been told that I have more chance to get contaminated during a simple walk in the local forest), but it never does harm to be careful

Oh, and handle the critter with care : The little guys are fighters when they feel they can't escape. Smart, brave, aggressive, good swimmers and jumpers... Many of my colleagues have an healthy respect of cornered rats defending their nests.

(I'm a sewer worker, and my yearly vaccine shot is planned for tomorrow, so it feels weirdly appropriate to be asked about them today. With my line of work, I should despise or hate the lil' buggers, but I think I kinda admire, or even like, them. Especially since one of them seem to have taken a liking to our teams, and follows us during our underground inspections in his part of the network ^^)

They are survivors. Rats and roaches will outlast the human race, both are even very adaptable to high levels of radiation, just look at the mouse population in Chernobyl, they are highly contaminated and pretty healthy, so I guess rats can do this too.

We've got a regular "infestation" of rats and mice on the area of our workshop and it always breaks my heart when boss is putting the traps in place, although I know that it's probably necessary.

That's kind of how I feel about killing it. I don't want to but I think it might be necessary.

Just borrow a neighbor's cat.

Hire The Bard, he'll know what to do.

Save a cat and let it do its thing.

Even if you don't want to own a cat, ask a friend who owns a long-haired cat to give you some of the dust bunnies it produces. Scatter said dust bunnies across the floor of the garage for a week or two, as well as around the yard. That way, the friends and family of the rat you're removing won't want to stick around long if they come looking for their buddy. From personal experience, rats and mice do not like the smell of felines.
