OneFiercePuppy: Tabletop BattleTech is for stat nerds. If you like really crunchy stats and really simple tactics, it's great fun. But you need to like to spend half your playtime preparing to play, because between loading out your 'Mechs and tallying all the damage during fights, you spend a whole lot of time not rolling dice or maneuvering your "armies."
Ah well, it's all for naught in any case: I don't really see myself going out and finding a group to play with.
Then again, perhaps I can try and create my own noob group someday :P It makes sense that there will be more number crunching in battletech than in something like 40K come to think of it, but as long as it's not too overbearing I can still imagine it being fun.

MobiusArcher: If you like Blue Gender you should check out Armored Trooper VOTOMS. Its by the same guy, and has similar-ish style mechs. Heavy Gear was inspired by VOTOMS.
That looks very interesting thanks :) I'll try to get my hands on an english dub somewhere.
And speaking of Heavy Gear, the lack of HG1 and HG2 are two of the more glaring omissions on gog.

Unfortunately only the first episode was ever dubbed in English.

Also, it looks like its impossible to get a hold of the whole series legally now. I guess I should have checked that before suggesting it. On the plus side, It looks like my boxed set is worth a ton of money now.

Ah that's a pity then :P But if I can get my hands on it I'll settle for the original dub then. Blue Gender I think spoiled me because the English dub in it I thought was done extremely well.

LootHunter: What about Sakura Wars? I can't say that I am very familiar with franchise, but I saw a couple of OVAs and mechs there are quite bluky.

Also, did you know that many mechs in Battletech have their design sto... I mean based on mechs from Robotech?
Looks a bit too, well, anime-ish for my liking if that makes any sense.

I've heard about that yes, and seen one or two examples, but it didn't look too serious to me at the time. Looked more like an artist was basing his/her mech off of a robotech design, rather than flat out copying it. Though some of the examples are undeniably strikingly similar. I can easily imagine Robotech fans being peeved off about it.

Serren: BattleTech style for me. I have always liked bulky "chicken-walker" designs like the Marauder, Timber Wolf, Dire Wolf and their respective variants.
Doesn't get anymore 'chicken'-walker than the Raven :)

And Dire Wolf ftw! But it will always remain my 2nd choice behind the good old Fafnir

timppu: If I think how I played Mechwarrior 2, it depended on the mission. IF I could choose only one type, then a faster nimbler one so that I can more easily dodge enemy shots, and equipped with some kind of energy weapons so that I have unlimited ammo.

While a slower and stronger mech was preferable in many missions, on some missions speed was of essence when you were e.g. trying to catch incoming enemies from different directions when they were hunting the cargo ships or whatever that you were supposed to be protecting.

EDIT: If this question was more about "Do you prefer Japanese mechs which are apparently made out of thin paper as they can do piruettes and somersaults in the air and move without inertia, or western mechs which are more like tanks on two legs?", then I prefer the western mechs, like in the Mechwarrior games.
Have you tried the mech commander games? It's one of those games in which the hardest setting provides for, I think, a very enjoyable challenge. Really tough, but also fair.

And sounds like you are also put off by the nimble and athletic mechs. In that case I'd definitely recommend you check out Blue Gender, and this coming from someone who doesn't consider himself an anime fan. A stand out quality of the mechs in it are the definite sense of weight and momentum behind them. And how surprisingly squishy they are against the blue.

I 've had Mechcommander Gold (and I think 2) retail for ages, just never gotten around to actually install and play them.

Mainly because they just don't make any sense to me. Something biiig made out of metal just shouldn't move around like a ballerina, without any inertia. It would make more sense if they were huge insects or something instead, not mechs.
Thought about this a bit; beast-like designs that move in organic patterns resembling those of animals their outer appearance hints at I believe are very cool. Machines that behave as if they were sentient. Dirty, used style where you can almost feel the diesel exhaust burning off your nose hairs...

For example, Ghost in the Shell's Spider Tank or that one from Destiny.

MechCommander Gold will run under Windows 10, only thing you need to do is enable DirectPlay (which requires digging into the Windows Control panel and looking at the Windows Features menu).
Mech Commander 2 has the Mechwarrior OmniTech freeware which is kinda-sorta-still being developed by 1 person who runs every Mech Commander 2 mission at BeyondHardcore difficulty.

In response to the Original Posts question: Well, I enjoy everything in the Brigador game universe. The mechsuits, the mechs, the tanks, the anti-gravity hovercraft AND the weaponized tuk-tuks. Brigador is the best non-Battletech branded Battletech game released in the past 10 years.

Haha, the Raven is a very bird-like design. I only vaguely remember the Fafnir from MW4, but it's definitely a great design; sort of a bulked up Rifleman. It's been years since I played the MW4 games, so I should break out the discs and give them another go soon.

MW2 is my favourite of the series and I tend to think mostly of mechs from that game and GBL. I'm just going to leave these links here:
