My grandfather is 90 years old, and his ancient computer just died. He had Windows 98 on it and used it only to play solitaire, mahjong, etc. The family got him a new Windows 7 computer and asked me to put games on it. The problem is I couldn't find any simple card or board games that weren't filled with ads, buttons for downloads, or some allegedly epic fantasy story about anime girls. He just wants plain cards. Even the games that come standard with Windows constantly flash ads or try to open a webpage. He does not have an internet connection, and he does not have the computer skills to learn linux or use dos box. He is suspicious of ads and will refuse to play games with them, thinking they are trying to scam him. I will have to buy the games and download them myself or give him a boxed edition. Any suggestions?

I have the Hoyle Games on Gamersgate, Card and Board games. Last time I checked they were still DRM free and I love them. They have all the basics and then some more fancy titles (and they do cheat at backgammon), but it's all there and it's strait forward playing. Sure you can decorate your avatar, IF YOU WANT, but that's totally optional.

tinyE: Hoyle Games on Gamersgate
This looks perfect! Thanks!
The regular card games in Windows 7 doesn't have ads, that only applies to Windows 8 and later.

Windows 7's latest version has the Microsoft Solitaire Collection instead of the older games. His computer did have this. I'm not sure how to revert it.
If he's okay with playing on a website, http://worldofsolitaire.com/ is fantastic for this.

It’s funny to see how your grandfather understands more about ads in software than most of the "digital generation" people I’ve met ;)

Oh boy, I've spent way too much time on various iterations of those over the years.

Yeah. He gets the reality of it. They are actually trying to scam him.

Cool website (I've just played a quick game), but according to the OP grandpa doesn't have an internet connection.
About the DOSBox part, you could make a shorcut (GOG style) so he can play a DOS game without the tweaking. Just clickclick and start playing.

Looks like they have a good offline version as well. Thanks for the heads-up.
