Everyone who is interested in horror games has heard about the Silent Hill series. I think we are aware that the heyday of this series is long gone (although it is possible that they cannot return). Currently, players can purchase Homecoming or The Room digitally. If someone has a Microsoft console, they can also play HD Collection, although it leaves a lot to be desired. At the moment, Konami does not take (explicitly) any steps to restore Silent Hill 2 and 3 for sale. If someone wants to (primarily legally) play these games, he must look for the appropriate offer in auction sites and online stores. Unfortunately, it can sometimes cost around 160 euros (for the Sony 6th generation console). Can players do anything about this (e.g. submit a petition)?

Jackin123: submit a petition?
Yeah i'm also a horror fan and want silent hill on pc instead of those console shit or physical. But i don't think they will concern about players choices, if they do we'd have been playing it already. sad...

The best you can do is to flood Konami with emails requesting that they continue their collaboration with GOG by releasing more titles on the platform.

The first Silent Hill just release on Playstation, and 2 and 3 lost the source code so are really difficult to adopt, maybe 2 if they release the game with the HD Enhancement that the community has bee working on it, but the third is really complicated :/

I tried contacting Konami but didn't even get a reply. So yeah ...

Yes, the only way is to convince as many people as possible to do the same: siblings, cousins, friends. Obviously it would take thousands of emails, I think it's the only remotely credible way to get corporations of this caliber to lift a finger.
I know from speedruns that 2 and 3 work fine on PC, and even have some nice community made enhancement mods. It's weird Konami won't sell them since they obviously maintain the rights. Since they released 4 here and not 2 or 3 I wonder if there's a licensing issue.
It would take some high profile teletuber or reviewer/outlet to get any kind of reply other than an automated one from 'em at best. I wouldn't hold my breath, but I'm all in for classic SH2 and 3 on PC. The HD collections on consoles were bad btw. I no longer have the SH2 director's cut pc edition unfortunately, so digital re-release would be a godsend to many.

Btw that HD enhancement mod gets better with each video those guys post: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYzdSYKXRogxFstYmPloBHw
It's amazing piece of work, respectful of the source and original vision, just like RE4 HD mod, etc.
At first I thought they were going to slowly release SH2, 3 and 4 one at a time, starting with 4 because it's the least popular, but it could be that there actually is a problem with 2 and 3 that's more difficult and time consuming to resolve. If either of them were to be released any time soon I'd imagine October is most likely, like with SH4. That still leaves some of the other SH games (1, Origins, Shattered Memories and Downpour) even less easy to access.

I have never understood this. Maybe we're all spoiled by git but these aren't from the arcade days. I find it incredible that Sony had commercials on TV during the time these were developed. Multi-person teams. Marketing budgets. How was the source code not backed up multiple places? This wasn't a hobbyist who suddenly had a hit on his hands from tinkering. The source code IS the product your studio makes and sells for money. It's an asset.

Anyhow that's my rant. I understand why it's difficult but really does anyone have any insight as to how source code was treated during the 90s that we have "lost" source code from well know games?
There are still other games The Medium is based on Silent Hill, if I know it correctly. Some elements inspired the creation of The Medium.
As much as I respect archival efforts, I prefer to write off Silent Hill 1 as a lost cause; Its better off faithfully remade with modern assets.

Konami got into HEAVY issues with the voice actors / licence agreements with those when re-releasing part 2 and 3 in HD versions. I doubbt that we will EVER see those ones again ever.

They COULD make a new voice over, but since they would have to invest heavy amounts of costs doing new voice acting for all languages, that is not doable.

I mean, the 90s was a difficult time for back up apparently, many games lost their source code during that era, even Toy Story 2 was almost complete wiped out due to an error.
Maybe somebody has a copy of the sourcecode somewhere and don't know but for now is really difficult to adapt both games, you basically have to remake them to remaster them :/
