Shovel Knight is currently at 769th position on the best-selling list, which means that a bit less than half the GOG catalog has sold less than 12000/6000 copies.

MacArthur: No, shovel knight released day one here and on steam at the same time. Plus, it released during the summer sale of GOG and steam. But you believe what you want.

ncameron: The correction would have been enough, thanks.

Was Shovel Knight early access then? I seem to recall hearing a lot about it before it showed up here.
Sorry for that, never had a clue if the other poster is ironic or not.

^^^^ There are also plenty of "deluxe edition" or "soundtrack" in the later half of GOG catalogue.

Vitek: And yet most publishers keep the price of retail and digital the same.
That's because retailers wouldn't stock the game otherwise.
Wow, good.
Assuming that they have, at least $1 from each sold copy, 12000*1$=12000$.

12000$, wow.

They are rich.
Congratulations :)

timppu: I haven't bought it yet, if that matters. I was thinking of, but I guess I am still waiting for a GOG sale. I must admit I wouldn't have given the game a second thought without the praise I read here, since the trailer makes it look like a vanilla platformer, but of course a mere video can't convey the gameplay quite well.

I was a bit disgruntled though when I realized that apparently the great Shovel Knight music in the trailer... is just the trailer music, not the actual game music. The actual game apparently has simpler SID-like music, I think? Oh well...
It's actually NES style music.

Here's probably my favorite track in the game (actually added by the free expansion):

(Yes, this is how it sounds in the game.)

haydenaurion: Once again i'll add that another reason it probably didn't sell as well here is because hardly anyone knew it was coming to gog until damn near last minute. I didn't find any info about it coming here until about a few days before release. -_-

JudasIscariot: This is part of the reason why we put as many games as we can in the "Upcoming" tab :)

Also, the game had its premiere during one of our biggest sales of that year so yeah there's that. Still, 12,000 copies is not bad at all considering the circumstances :)
You're right, 12,000 copies is not bad and in the grand scheme of things, a good number of sales overall. On a similar note, I wonder how many copies of "The Witcher 3" were sold on GOG vs. other sales venues.

Since you mention the 'Upcoming' tab, it's not really "in your face" on the main page, kind of subtle gray tab and easy to miss if you don't know it already exists.

I'm still waiting for "Crawl", which has been on the upcoming tab for quite some time now; definitely living up to its name for time to appear for sale here on GOG.

It'll surely be here before Nekro does. :P

do we know for sure that the numbers of sold copies matters for the top, or maybe the gross selling total value?
OK, GOG, you got me, about hour after I complain about free DLC getting too little exposure you made annoncement post for one for Thea. I am sorry. :-)

Starmaker: That's because retailers wouldn't stock the game otherwise.
Yet, Shovel Knight's creators were able to sell it for higher retail price.
And they are small studio. I doubt big distributors don't have bigger leverage to push it through if only they wanted.

neurasthenya: That 32% (or 34%) though.
avatar
MacArthur: I can play the 66% card for the consoles too :) (...)
The point is, that's 34% for one platform alone, while this 66% is across multiple platforms (obviously would be higher).
Individually, no console platform outsold the PC.

Quit being condescending, you said it was primarily a console game.

Man.........

It sold 66% of its 1 200 000 on consoles, with 200 000 units in miitomo ! I know the pc master race, but common !

Yes we know that, because when two games arrive at the same time, the more expensive one is is often on top of the charts on the main page, but the cheaper one is in front in the games catalogue. Which can only mean that it's total revenue on the main page and units sold in the catalogue.

fortune_p_dawg: That's it? For such an awesome game, that's a damn shame.
The reality is shovel knight is a copy of many platform games us old timers have played to death. AKA shovel knight was not the second coming of 8 bit style platfom/action game innovation. I'm sorry but the NES graphics really are past there time, while they are a charming throwback I would have liked to take the art team of say awesomenauts and apply it to a game like shovel knight. There's no need to release a game with crap 8 bit graphics.

Many of us old timers are burnt the hell out because of how bad the industry has been for the last 20 years, the last 15 years of drm, dlc, mmo/f2p has been a kind of nightmare for any of us who gamed in the 90's and aren't braindead. The lack of modding tools/level editors and game servers you can actually run yourself.

Thanks to valve/blizzard/everquest/world of warcraft, the entire game industry is increasingly releasing locked down games to a new ignorant/tech illiterate generation of players who are ignorantly destroying gaming culture by funding these criminal organizations.
