Also, it is not like the Japanese are any better themselves! You see, there is this legendary real-life Finnish war hero (sniper) who killed a couple billion Russians in the Winter War, Simo Häyhä:

The Japanese made a manga cartoon version of him, "Shiroi Majo" (The White Witch):

Not only did they change how he looks... but they turned him into a woman! What a sacrilege! Everyone knows women can't shoot shit!

I could care less about the race issue and more about the fact that this movie shouldn't even be made to start with. I really don't trust Hollywood to handle the series with care. They tend to like simplifying things for the audience so that it is easily digested, yet GitS often deals with philosophical and complex issues. I feel this is all going to be boiled down into a generic sci-fi cyborg story type film.

PS. I really like the original films and the SAC series, so I am extremely biased. :(
Max Landis lends his thoughts on this:

Pfft, fuck hollywood, what interesting things have they done in the past how many years? Remakes, corny shit with filters and shitty CGI everywhere, and bastardizations.
This is how you do it properly!
I disagree on the front that it can't be any good. Tron Legacy rocked. Edge of Tomorrow also rocked All You Need Is Kill. Then again it could be a Aeon Flux or Dragonball and totally misjudged, but I think everyone realizes now something like that won't fly.

Also one thing I learned from Robert Rodriguez, famous actors are usually famous because they are actually quite good. Hence we know Scarlett Johansson can hold the screen well, support a whole movie on her own and get the audiance to care about her story.

A really good choice.
Personally, I don't care, as I don't generally care about movies.

That said, I can only wonder how many people who couldn't understand the backlash of a black human torch is now complaining about a white Motoko Kusanagi. I get the feeling is more than one or two.
Can we see her you-know-what in Ghost in Shell remake??

True. I dont remember a single movie where she was bad.

Breja: I'm so glad I don't care. About Ghost in the Shell I mean (or anything japanese in origin really). I'm so tired of the endless debating of race and gender of movie characters. Too many female characters! Too many male characters! X should not be black! Y should not be white! Fuck's sake I'm tired of it. I swear it didn't used to be like this. Can't we just go back to the 80's, watch and discuss awesome movies without any of this crap?
I'd rather we debate the fact that Hollywood suffers from a one-size-fits-all directing style, which is the main reason why adaptations of well-loved franchises tend to suck so much ass.

tinyE: She could play a table lamp and I'd go see it!
Will you invite me? Shall we go on a date together to the movies to watch this one, then? Is it settled? I will treat you to cola and pop-corn, in return!

Surely Hollywood has some good actress who is Japanese? Like a female version of Ken Watanabe
Hollywood and good together in the same sentence...? -_-

It's a bit silly. You got a japanese character in the series and you use a american actress to cast the japanese character.
