Hello

I am wondering if its possible to run GOG games off USB sticks, because when I am travelling with work "company restrictions on corporate machines" prevent me from installing games. I'd like the opportunity to revisit some classics when in hotel room, without having to cough up for a personal computer for travel as well.

So anyone have similar issues and a solution?

Cheers

This exact question comes up from time to time. Without knowing what games exactly, there's not a lot of specific help we can offer, but in general, what you want to do is search for the term "portable install" with your games. Many games - especially older ones - can run just fine when "installed" to a removable device.

Of course, even with a portable install, your IT people will be able to tell that you were playing games on the laptop, and it's probably still against the rules. So that's the risk you'll have to take - will they care enough to go look?

Anyway, check the game-specific forums, or just google that term, portable install.

EDIT: You can pick up a pretty decent refurbished laptop to run older games for about 200-250 euro, btw, if you're ok with a smaller screen. Me, I'm a "better safe than sorry" guy, myself, and an 11.6" laptop is usually about one kilo and fits in the accessory pocket of most laptop bags. Just FYI.

Well theyve blocked steam on the inhouse server, but I still have some games installed from before they deployed the UAC. Doubtfully that they care. Perhaps it would be best to get personal laptop as well.
The answer would be "depends on the game". Mostly yes, some with a bit of tweaking.

Now since you've written "classics", I assume you mean older games? If they are DosBox ones then it's extremely easy. I've played Might and Magic 1 this way a lot.

Yes it's possible.
You can use thininstall or any such program to make it so.
While it can make any s/w portable I would suggest you to install those games only which has save file WITHIN GAME DIRECTORY.

...keep in mind that there's a thread talking about "old games" from as recently as 2011 that's been on the first page for the last couple days. Old is pretty relative :P

Get off my lawn, you damn whippersnappers!

For older games, half the time you can just copy the files from your PC to the drive and then run from there. The only install bits which make a difference is when the install changes the registry. That can be a pain. A few games already have portable versions, Battle For Wesnoth for install can be got directly through Portable Apps.

Not necessarily DosBox ones, thinking in the line of isometric rpgs, like baldurs gate, Fallout.

Baldur's gate does work. Just install normally, copy the folder to USB stick and then run the executable when you want to play.

Some games don't even complain about that, while others will slow down to a pathetic crawl, because you are running the game off a really slow local connection via the USB drive. However, it is very much possible. For example, I know that you can throw Freedom Planet on a USB drive and play it off the USB drive. No need to move it to the PC or install it on the PC. However, you should be worried about whether the USB drive and games on it will get past the aforementioned restrictions or not. However, if you manage to get around the restrictions, well have fun while it lasts. You're probably taking advantage of a loophole, and you using it might as well lead to the loophole being patched later.
