I'm guessing a lot of you know by now of the 3 shareware levels of the colour brown worshipper's favourite shooter - Quake II. Admittedly I've only just stumbled across this - seeing as I've not had the money to get even the previous generation of RTX cards, let alone the 3800.
Back in the day I was too busy playing interesting games like Sin and Soldier of Fortune to be bothered about Quake II. But it's made me think. If they can do this for Quake II, does that mean some talented people out there could be working on interesting titles....? Like Jedi Knight II, Soldier of Fortune, and the like..?! If so what a time to be alive!
Yeah hopefully some are adding raytracing to old games. When I heard and tried quake 2 rtx I wondered why that game? I would think that first Quake would have been better choice. Hexen would be cool.
But last time I tried quake 2 rtx with my 2060 super.. well let's just say it didn't blow my mind performance-wise. Effects were good looking.
It's just if even quake 2 with rtx can tank your fps to below 20 what hope other games could have?

I've been switching on and of rtx on cyberpunk and really pondering is that really worth it (especially when reflections don't reflect your charachter), in current state with my card, it's a no, I mean I could have managed with around 40 fps if it was like slower game but when the combat starts you really do need to get some frames. DLSS makes a difference even when other effects are off and you can up the rez.

Maybe I should try quake 2 again though, maybe it's gotten better.

To be fair, it's full on RTX with global illumination etc. It's meant to be the most demanding implementation - other games have fewer effects and less of a performance hit (in Q2 RTX, on my 2070 Super, I go from 1,000+ fps in OpenGL to 60fps with RTX on - whereas I'm also hitting around 60 fps in Metro Exodus with RTX on - both at 1080 with ultra quality).

I think there have been some performance enhancements on Q2 since they first released, but ultimately, the original 2060 wasn't a great ray tracing card, so you'll never get fantastic performance. That being said, DLSS seems like an amazing technology (especially the latest version), so other ray traced games with a good DLSS implementation might work well.

Well I do have 2060 super so not totally the first iteration and Control game was well playable with good settings. Perhaps I could manage a lot of stuff in 1080p but I've gotten used to playing 1440p and now 1080p especially if I play it on TV it feels quite blurry. So I do indeed have to make a choice with additional effects or resolution mostly. I mean ultra performance in dlss is quite too far down.

Also it's kinda surprising when you toggle on and off with rtx in most games especially in metro exodus and even on cyberpunk you notice surprisingly little difference with the lighting, Then you watch like minecraft rtx trailer and are like holy shit how much different it looks but maybe because it just now gets any kind of lighting. =D
