I remember playing a demo of an RTS on PC (Windows) which allowed you to change perspective, see the battlefield from inside your vehicles as if you were driving them. It was a modern war game, maybe a bit futuristic, like Tom Clancy's EndWar but not too much in the future. The part I played was simply roaming around with a tank and just changing perspective like this. Either the demo was very limited or I didn't get to play it too much. I think it might have had some missions where you lead a small force since that demo looked very much like that, I was only driving a tank whereas the magazine info of the game bragged about letting you change perspective.

I played it in something like 2002-03, got it via some PC magazine that offered demos on its attached DVD (or CD). It required Pentium 3 to play and I was happy my (then) new AMD Duron 800MHz could handle it. Somehow I forgot to look for it afterwards but I remembered the idea with overview vs on the spot perspective and maybe someone knows something. Thanks for any help!

kaletan:
Either Uprising or Battlezone - both are here. Might also have been Renegade (the C&C action game).

Give me two minutes to edit and I'll link the store pages here.

Uprising: The first one ...

and the second one

Battlezone: Keep in mind this was a "Redux" so it'll look better than you remember

There's also a Battlezone sequel here AND a recent "reimaging" that just came out

Sequel: https://www.gog.com/game/battlezone_98_redux_the_red_odyssey

Reimaging: https://www.gog.com/game/battlezone_combat_commander

Microsoft's Urban Assault?
Not really an RTS but based on one: Command & Conquer: Renegade. You could drive vehicles in that game.
That sounds like Urban Assault.
I'm pretty sure this is not Urban Assault.

The demo is definitely more than just driving a tank. You have your host, you conquer zones & power stations, discover new units, produce units, take down enemy hosts.. you'll be driving and flying around in a whole bunch of units and you can man the guns in your host too.

Also Urban Assault is very much futuristic, not "modern warfare."

Also I don't recall there being an "overview perspective" like in typical RTS games; there's a map for sure, but outside of that you're looking from the perspective of any one of the units or guns you can take control of.

EDIT: Urban Assault also predates the Pentium 3.

I think I remember this, too. Did it have kind of a dark color scheme?

EDIT - Nevermind, I was thinking of Urban Assault.

The word you're looking for is "re-imagining" (with or without the hyphen). ;)
But the ones available here are ALL essentially just remasters.
Battlezone 98 Redux is indeed a gussied-up version of the original Battlezone. However, "The Red Odyssey" wasn't a sequel, but merely an expansion to the original (its redux version is even sold as a DLC for the base game's redux).
Combat Commander, on the other hand, was originally released under the name Battlezone II: Combat Commander in 1999, so it was (and is) a proper (contemporary) sequel, not a new entry in an old series. : )

Damn did I muck that up! I admit I was confused as to what was what as they were released (I wish I could remember because someone else, either in a release thread or a review really nailed it as to what was a sequel and what was an expansion - so glad you laid it out again here!).

And as someone who has both a penchant for the hyphen AND is a stickler for spelling, I stand both embarrassed and chagrined by whatever the hell "reimaging" is LOL. I think it's like scanning a document, but a second time.

To be fair, Rebellion didn't exactly name the remasters the most clearly, or even consistently -- the first one had both the original release year and the word "redux" in its title (which is overkill); its expansion just had "redux"; and the sequel just went with the original title with no additions, but without the number that made clear that it was a sequel. It's like they were trying to confuse people.
Sounds like "Hostile Waters: Anateus Rising," which is on GOG for $5.99 at present. (Despite the word "waters" in the title you control all sorts of land and air vehicles.)
Boy oh boy, when seeing the Battlezone Remastered games I thought those might be it. Because they were the ideal image of what I wanted the game to be. After looking at the raw old footage of the games, Antaeus is mine. The T1R tank was what I was driving and the whole interface with a lot of green marked objects matches what I remember. Minute 14 onward: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFDi9xhxEcg Also, the system requirements were not quite Pentium III but just II: http://gamesystemrequirements.com/game/hostile-waters-antaeus-rising The point about me being happy with my Duron was I had a 486 until 2001 or so, then the Duron while not the best, could run everything I couldn't previously.

Now I'm very sad that Urban Assault isn't on GOG. And I'm very sad that it sold so poorly they never quite finished the expansion they had planned. It's one hell of a special game...
Dang, for a second I was sure it would be Wargasm.
Lol I heard the name Wargasm before but only saw a poster image for it, not gameplay. Love the name though!
