I first played MYST with my kids way back in 1996. The kids are now all grown up, married and out of the coop... For some reason, I felt a hankering to re-visit MYST. After much flaffing about with virtual PCs, XP modes and all that I was led to GOG. I purchased the whole available set of the MYST games, incomplete as it is. Initially, it was a struggle on my Windows 7 Pro PC. MYST kept crashing or freezing + crashing. GOG Galaxy was not much of a help. Eventually, by trial and error, I set my antivirus to "Enable gaming/multimedia mode", lowered my screen resolution to 1280 by 960 and took off! I dispensed with GOG Galaxy, simply installed and played. To cut the cackle, so far I have enjoyed the downloaded game from GOG and am very happy with it. I hope this happy state will continue with the remaining series.A big thank you to GOG!
Nice. I only played to Myst2 (Riven) back in the day and loved it :)
It's easy to get stuck though.
The only way I could play it is with some kids because my mind is too old and failing to even begin to get through that game. :P

I bow down before anyone who is good at it. :D

You're re-visiting the Myst series? Assuming you're beginning with #1, may I suggest you try a remastered version, such as realMyst: Masterpiece edition? I believe it even includes a new age. I know realMyst does.
Myst is one of my favorite games/series. If you ever need help with it (such as getting stuck in a particular section where you need a hint but don't want to entirely spoil it with a walkthrough), feel free to contact me.
I suggest playing RealMyst Masterpiece. It keeps the age of the game well, but also is far less of a bother to get running.

Ah yes, the classics...

Myst is one of a few games I have revisited more then twice.

Here's Gog's subforum for the myst games if you're interested:

Fairfox: Huh! Now it seems there's too many variants, so Imma put off buying.
They're not really variants. They're remakes which they slightly improved each time. realMyst: Masterpiece Edition is the last, and best one they made.

Fairfox: Y'knooow, I've never actually played any of 'em, even though I totes grew up in the period they were big. Huh! Now it seems there's too many variants, so Imma put off buying.
my brother and i would sit for hours at a time playing both games. we had the booklet that came with the game so you could write notes to help w/puzzles and such. i remember thinking everything looked so real.

however, the original would be a pita to play b/c you have to click to move to the next screen, there is no walking around. and i remember when i played it again years ago, i thought the load times were insane.

That might make the puzzles a little difficult.

Or make them make perfect sense.
