Darvond: Pardon, snapped a little at the end there. Did you expect the Bethesda launcher to be killed off this swiftly? What other parts do you expect to be shuttered?
I expected it to go earlier. Microsoft already have the DirectXBox PC launcher, so they didn't need a separate one just for one of their sub-publishers/developers.

It won't impact any monetisation opportunities, which will either migrate to the Microsoft ecosystem of will be fully in-game.
It's always a good day when a pointless launcher and/or useless layer got killed, no matter it will not die completely and will not have a huge impact. Lesser the better.
nice, all my games and mods in one place on Steam.

I'm not really mourning the loss, I just wish Bethesda was cool enough to offer us the option to redeem our Bethesda games on GOG whenever said games are available. Going from a crap launcher to a crap client isn't much of an improvement except that Steam has more features.

Hopefully the migration process won't be too much of a pain for us, I really don't want to jump through hoops to port over 76 and the handful of freebies I claimed there.

So now Bethesda fans will be subject to one layer of DRM-infestation --- which still means their games are rented, not owned --- instead of two.

I don't see that as any kind of "improvement." Bethesda games will remain just as unbuyable as they were before. Not that they make games that are worth buying anyway.

CymTyr: This is actually a sign Phil Spencer knows what he's doing. Will he go for DRM free? I doubt it. But we still have MS owned properties on GOG to this day, which is a promising sign.

He's a gamer like we are, and he wants gaming to succeed like we do. If there ever comes a point where DRM free is viewed as commercially viable for the big players, you can bet Xbox/MS will be the first to do it. As it stands now, they all have too much FOMO to do anything but release old games on GOG because they're afraid of YARRR.

I really like Phil. Strikes me as a guy you could have a beer with and just conversate on not just gaming, but the world in general. I was hoping they'd allow migration to GOG, but I can see how they can't, because maintaining a bethesda net login requirement for stuff would be construed by the local population as DRM.

Maybe some day we'll see more Bethesda titles here. Maybe even MS/Xbox stuff like Fable? One can dream. In the meantime, one less launcher is definitely good news. I want to see battle net disappear too.
I will say this again for people who do not know this about Phil Spencer.

I do not know if Phil Spencer cares if video games are Digital Rights Management (DRM) free or not, but he acknowledges that gog.com exists and he said he is ok with gog.com a few years ago.

Spencer is a grifter. He'll never approve of releasing their games on GOG, not while M$ is pushing Game Pass (AKA: the ultimate DRM scheme).
help me out here, what happens if i don't have a steam account?
is it possible to buy games directly from bethesda (something like uplay/origin)?

Yes - they should be available on the XBoxPC programme/app.

See example: https://www.xbox.com/en-gb/games/store/fallout-4-pc/9P71MB9QCF77

I dunno, I feel like this might be an exception to the typical Microsoft way, given how they keep treating gaming with a half-committal "eeehhhh" on the PC at times.

Exactly. If how you put it is the case, it is just like when Scheme users throw parties over Denuvo (or whatever equivalent) being removed from "their" games despite the Schemeworks DRM being intact. It's like, who cares, it's still a DRMed product. I put the word "their" in quotes since these folks don't own or have any real control over the games, which they are effectively renting but pretending they are not renting.

Its to a degree a improvement as it means less laumcher needs and less BS bloat aswell as less unneeded crude running on pc at the same time for a game.. Plus its one step closer to possibly having the games show up here.. That and many people hate launchers and drm .. So less of such things is often viewed as a improvement.. thus a need to praise and celebrate even if just a little bit
