I loved Wizardry 8. The party-based mechanics, the puzzles, the quests, etc. I love how you see the game-world through the eyes of the characters (camera is in a center-view window) and you don't actually "see" the characters in-world, you just see their portraits.

So, with that said, does anyone know of any modern or recently-developed RPGs that run on modern operating systems? I'm not talking about games like Pillars of Eternity or Baldur's Gate Enhanced. I'm talking about games that play similar to Wizardry 8 (like Frayed Knight: you see the world through the party's eyes).

So, any ideas? Also, is it just me, or do most modern RPGs pale in comparison to the old-school RPGs with regards to immersion and stories and such?

EDIT: I suppose I could just say a modern, first-person, party-based RPG :-P

Another EDIT: Oh, and I loved Might and Magic X: Legacy! That's one example of a good first-person, party-based RPG.

Thunderscape?
If you loved MM X, then why won't you check on Might and Magic I-IX? Each of those is much superior to MM X.
I believe Legend of Grimrock 1 & 2 are similar, though I haven't played them.

Edit: Paper Sorcerer is a light version of the concept, though I don't think it has that many puzzles.

I've played those and loved them all. I'm actually looking for modern RPGs that play similar, though. Games like Legend of Grimrock (made in "modern" times and first-person, party-based).

I'm just not sure if any developer has made something like this, though, other than Grimrock and MMX:Legacy. I just can't think of any others, so I was hoping someone else could ;-)

Yep, those are exactly like what I"m looking for (but with more story than what was in both of the Grimrock games). Wizardry 8 was so awesome, and it took hundreds of hours to play it (I like taking my time). It seems most modern games like this, though, aren't as immersive, story-wise, but really look great :-)

Oooh! Paper Sorcerer looks interesting! I'll have to check that one out. It's cheap, too! That's a plus. Thanks!

Strijkbout: Thunderscape?
Thunderscape looks like a decent game. I'll have to check it out. I am, however, more interested in finding games like that, but with more modern graphics.

Grimoire superdemo

jamotide: Grimoire superdemo
Grimoire looks great! I watched a snippet of a video on YouTube about it. Now I need to see if it's for sale. I caught a glimpse of a Kickstarter sight for it from 2013, so I'm wondering if it's actuall a full game now.

Even though the graphics are modeled on early-CRPGs, I still think I'd enjoy this one! Thank you!

EDIT: Darn, looks like it's still in development, but some of the backers seem to feel it'll never see the day of light as a complete game. Ah well.

Oh boy. Good luck with that. It's been "very close" to release for how many years now?

Heh, yeah. I just investigated Grimoire and it seems dead in the water and has been in development for 20 years? Some of the backers appear to be very upset. Still, I may keep my eye on it to see if it ever releases.

Your welcome. :)

I am currently making my way through Paper Sorcerer an I should warn you that it is rather bare bones, with an ugly menu. The graphics looks nice though and you can customize your party with a variety of monsters with differing play styles so overall I am enjoying myself, but I don't think it will be your next 100+ hour time sink.

Apparently the superdemo is like a normal full game length wise

Ah, well, I can at least bide my time playing it until something else comes along. I like most all RPGs, but really love the first-person ones, as opposed to the top-down, isometric ones like Baldur's Gate, Pillars of Eternity, etc. Was hoping on the off chance that someone might know of something like that because, for the life of me, I can't find anything similar (except ones that I've played already like the Grimrock series, MMX:Legacy, etc). But, Paper Sorcerer looks interesting so I've just bought it and will give it a shot. :-)
I don't think you'd find many games that really follow up on Wizardry 8. Western developers pretty much abandoned the subgenre, and while Japanese developers still make a lot of first person dungeon crawlers they tend to follow more after the mold of the earlier wizardry games than wizardry 8 (in particular, The Dark Spire lol)

You could try Elminage Gothic, and I believe that Stranger of Sword City is eventually going to get a pc release (but probably not on GOG).

Hey! That Elminage Gothic looks pretty good! Just based on the video on Steam it looks like something I'd enjoy. I'm going to buy that one now, too! It's only $9.99.

Thanks!

EDIT: Yes, I believe you've found me a game that will sate the Wizardry 8 lust that I've been having lately. Thank you so much! I'm marking your suggestion as the solution.

I'm sure I will, but mrcrispy83 has brought to my attention a game that looks almost exactly like what I'm looking for, Elminage Gothic. From the reviews and videos I've watched, I think this is something I'll really enjoy. I already bought Paper Sorcerer, but I may have to put it on the back burner a bit. Thanks for telling me about it, though!
