Can't say 1-ups or lives in general have ever really been a part of my PC gaming, but I did like how Doom Eternal recently did it with 1-ups giving you a second chance when you died. That was kinda cool, especially since that game is so insanely hectic and you can easily slip up and get overwhelmed out of nowhere.
I don't recall any PC games that I played that had 1-ups. On the other hand, I remember plenty of arcade games in the 80's that gave 1-ups and some even gave it when you plopped down those quarters. Those slots had voracious appetites for your quarters, surprised I still have my fingers.

There are plenty of games in my library that I haven't played yet, maybe a few of them have 1-ups.

Besides her personal desire for representation among games, she really loves unusual game mechanics and trying to figure out new ways to change some of them, or repurpose them. Some haven't been good, some have been intriguing or funny. If some people took time to talk to her instead of harassing her they might see that. A lot of us already have.
There is no relevance between my comment and your reply, like whatsoever. I could reply now, and write that 'you are a person sceptical regarding the squirrels'. It makes equal amount of sense and relevance.

*semi spoilers*

And that's true even more so in the expansion(especially with things like the gauntlets one has to do in that).

I honestly booted up the expansion, saw how they ramped things up even more, and then bailed. Maybe someday, but my tastes nowadays are more for slower paced shooters that focus on exploration and stealth. Actually my taste was always for that, it's just gotten even more so.

The conclusion(and setup for the second expansion) is nice(albeit a bit predictable), and the lore and environments decent as well....that's a good part of why I persisted until I beat it....but yeah, it is a good deal tougher than a good number will care for.

That's why I say: thank the gawds for sentinel armor :)
(only available if one loses a few times during a boss battle afaik)

With that and putting the game on lower difficulties, the expansion becomes much more tolerable.
(minus the aforementioned gauntlets, of course)

Sidenote: If you never go back to it, i'd recommend watching the ending cutscenes online somewhere and finding a place to read any lore you didn't get.....it is quite nice.

Ontopic: If this game was in the arcades of old, it'd make people go through quarters like popcorn, I bet.

Not gonna pretend I am shooter guy extraordinaire, but it's more about how hectic it is. It gives me anxiety and stress, when I usually want to relax with a game nowadays. Same thing with survival horror, I enjoy the genre but it's more stressful than relaxing, so I usually play it sparingly between other things.

I actually still have Doom Eternal installed, and the Resident Evil 3 remake, but I play them in short bursts here and there while I focus on stealth and RPG games.

I hear ya....I am near the same(preferring less hectic games most times, along with the ability to save)....in part due to getting older(and not wanting to do stuff like replay a game level or etc 20+ times).

As I am now, games with limited lives would not be on the top of my list usually....for obvious reasons. ;)

Strange, as I just played some of Bloodstained Classic Mode, which:
* Is less hectic because you move slowly. Further, I was playing 1986 mode, which removes the faster movement options you would otherwise have. (Notably, this is *much* slower paced than the main game.)
* Gives you limited lives. One death puts you at the start of the room, but running out of lives takes you back to the start of the stage.

Still, what I said seems to usually(from what i've seen and noticed) hold true more often than not.

Many gamers seem to tend to play slower and/or more "forgiving" games(or at lower difficulties or with cheats) as they grow older(or as their time becomes more limited for other reasons).

(of course there are exceptions to the rule and this doesn't hold true for everyone....or even for the same people if they find a game they'll make a personal exception for: like me with Doom Eternal, for example)

Anxiety and Stress has been my experience with Doom Eternal as well. Which is a shame, it's my favorite series and I utterly loved Doom 2016. The mixture of hard as hell combat and long levels full of secret collectibles makes for gaming sessions that end with me tired and with my heart on my throat all the time.

At least, I recently found out that you can stop in a level anytime, go back to farm extra lives in the older ones and can even go back to your last campaign checkpoint with health and armor and ammo maxed out. It helps a little bit, but I'm still going on at a snails pace.

I think at this day and age I'm a bit more in love with open world games with small quickly achievable goals (missions, collectibles, etc).

Anxiety and stress also happens in Celeste, albeit for an entirely different reason, and yet Celeste has quick respawns and unlimited lives.

Yeah I think there's a reason that what I call "open world checklist games" are so popular now. People want to calm their minds after a day of stress, and you can just explore and find things for a quick reward. It's relaxing. I'm not as into those, I am more into immersive stealth and RPG stuff (Deus Ex, Dishonored, Hitman), but I think it's a similar impulse.

As you said though, I was a big fan of Doom when I was 14, and still replay episodes here and there. I also loved Doom 3, and enjoyed Doom 2016 a lot. I can play stuff like Doom 2016 here and there when I'm in the mood, and enjoy it. I think Eternal is just a breaking point for me, it goes too far into being manic and stressful to be enjoyable.
i usually favor my strategy iron manned.. go from there
The last game I played that had limited lives/1-ups was Klonoa 2. You can freely save between levels. In practice, running out of lives meant you had to start a level from the beginning instead of the last checkpoint. The game was released in the early 2000s, limited lives mechanic was already getting phased out.

Limited lives added a sense of tension, especially if the punishment was starting over. At the same, time, they also made the games seem longer than they really were.
