For many gamers, those were the first hot-seat games of childhood. Warlords series is back on our PCs thanks to Slitherine and GOG.COM. Check out turn-based strategy titles that preceded games like Heroes of Might and Magic.

As a leader of one of the fantasy factions, you have to conquer the land, vanquish your enemies while searching for magical treasures and beasts. Warlords I + II and Warlords III: Darklords Rising are games that still provide lots of fun in single and multiplayer and are quite a challenge even for experienced gamers.
I've downloaded all 3 games after buying and I'm wondering, why Warlords 2 installer is so big. It's almost 2x size of Warlords 3. After installing there is the same thing. I see there is bulky "hidden" CD image, but why it's so huge?

Just for curiosity I've copied "game.gog" file and renamed it on W2.iso, then mounted it in virtual drive... Content of this CD image is taking about 84 MB. That's right, 84 MB.

Other question - I understand that Warlords 2 is in Deluxe Edition, but is there "hidden" vanilla version of Warlords 2 (released 2 years earlier)? Or only Warlords 2 Deluxe?

I've recently installed Warlords 2 Deluxe (from GOG) on my GPD Win and it's going teeeribly slow (especially sound), I've never experienced it with any DosBox game from GOG.

Probably you need to slow down dosbox.

By defect the game is configured at 30000 cycles cpu, and that numbers could be too much for some computers. Slowing down to some like 15000 or 17000 the sound plays fine. When cycles are too high the sounds/music use to lag over dosbox.

For people who don't know it, you can adjust "on the fly" when running the game with Ctrl+F11 and Ctrl+F12 (to test what's better for example): https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Special_Keys
CTRL-F11 Decrease DOSBox cycles (slows down the emulation).
CTRL-F12 Increase DOSBox cycles (speeds up the emulation).
But this modified settings won't stay after you close the game, if you want to always have the same emulation speed, you have to manually edit the dosbox *.conf file of the game (in the "[cpu]" part, put the desired value after "cycles=") .

Thanks, I didn't checked conf file and indeed the change of cycles helped.

17000 cycles here and the game runs great

I noticed the weird oversized disc image too. There is no way it should be anywhere near 700MB so I mounted game.gog and wrote the contents to a new image which is only 92MB and the game works fine with it. It seems as if GOG made a raw rip of the entire disc, including the "empty"/unallocated space.

I too prefer the floppy version. It would be a nice bonus to have both available.

As for DOSBox, I had the same sound problem. Lowering cycles to 20000 and setting frameskip to 1 fixed it for me. Normally I wouldn't want to add any frame skipping, but for a game like Warlords II it's not perceptible.

Does GOG ever go back and fix issues with these games or do they just make the community rely on their own fixes?

Good concept, I think that I'll make that "swap" of cd image as well. It's kinda weird though, because I remember plenty of GOG games which didn't had such "oversized" cd images.

So far I didn't had opportunity to play in Warlords 1-3 (until GOG's release), but I would try out of curiosity W2 in "primal" state. Not raising my hopes too high though (on the other hand - games such as Heroes of Might and Magic 2 or Prisoner of Ice have both Windows and Dos versions available, so maybe, maybe...)

xlnt: After so many years!!! YES! This is just fantastic - hope someone revives this, looking at Paradox (;
No, not Paradox. They would chop up the experience to make you pay for every unit as separate DLC. Luckily, they do not own this IP. Slitherine does.

Slitherine + GOG.com brought us some amazing delights I say. I salute em both.
War Wind on the gog.com side, Darklords, Close Combat 2 and some great Slitherine IPS. Wow. Too bad I thought the latter would never appear on our shores and subsequently bought some of their games on a Steam sale.

Nevertheless there are some awesome gems on their expanding calalog (wink wink Grant, Lee, Sherman: Civil War Generals 2??) everyone should enjoy! ;)
I cant play the game because whenever i try to start it, it says "Install WindowsPlay" then when I install it nothing happens and when I click play again it just pops it up. Please help me i love this game

Have you enabled directplay, which seeing as how you have not provided any information, is all I can really suggest.
https://softlay.net/how-to/enable-directplay-windows-10.html

For future reference, when saying something is not working, post system, e,g. Windows 10, specs, etc. You can also contact support on the website.
I've waited for a new release of this game for DECADES, literally.
The best fantasy turn-based game ever made, nothing can come even close to the immersion provided by it.
I cannot say how happy finding this game has made it's way onto GoG has made me :)
A version that just works on windows 10, after all of the faff trying to get the original to run stably is a perfect joy.

Thank you so much Good Old Games!
