A hardcore, 2D action-platformer where only precision can keep you from death – Volgarr the Viking II is here!

Players of the original game will feel right at home on this relentless voyage, even with the addition of new power-ups, new forms of magic, new enemy types, and a chest-thumping new soundtrack. While the sequel delivers the same unforgiving 1980s-arcade level of difficulty as the original, Volgarr the Viking II also (mercifully, begrudgingly) offers modern quality-of-life options such as checkpoints, save states, and an undead mode.

Now on GOG!

Thanks again, you made my week. I'm happy to report that Völgarr II indeed installs and plays flawlessly on this grandpa of a machine:

HP Pavilion G6 notebook, A6-3420M APU (launched 12/2011), 4GB RAM, Win7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Even my PS2 controller via an obscure Hongkong adapter got recognised instantly.

From what I can tell so far, the game plays great, people coming from the first will feel right at home. What some are criticizing seems to be Undead mode that gets turned on automatically after you've used six continues. It's fine, all you gotta know is that if you use all six continues, you need to start a new profile or delete the current one and begin anew, if you want to end Undead mode. It's basically a Game-Over mechanic that's tied to Völgarr's story with the worst ending attached if you play on as undead. I feel the game should tell you this, but overall I find it to not be an issue at all.

Time to flame-sword some lizards again!

gog2002x: So no, Volgarr II is a big skip for me. Thanks.

P.S. Thanks for bringing it to GOG though, for those that do want the game. :)

SilentMRG: Volgarr 2 is much easier than the first, and it has a "god" mode that will make things a little easier... See: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2195140/discussions/0/4515506995733353472/

It will be great if they release a patch for the first one with this "undead" mode. =D

Thanks for sharing that info.

I will watch to see if anything happens with the 1st one before I decide anything on the 2nd. I want to be able to play that first (even if only a little), so I don't feel like I wasted my money completely lol.

chevkoch: I trust the dev team here to work it out. I mean, they produced a Dreamcast port of the first Völgarr and offered it for free, they're the good guys in my book :) That they're again focusing on optimizing the second game is just being true to their coding ethic of the past I figure. Thanks again for reporting on this in the first place, it came as a surprise to me too that you could possibly run this on ancient hardware.
They will definitely resolve this issue. =) It's like I said: It's very rare these days to find 2D games optimized for potatoes, and these guys did it for poor men like us, hehe. XD

Enebias: Thanks for the insight!
Much easier than 1, you say? Hmmm. Good fir my old bones! XD

By the way, now that I think about it: long ago, way before Volgarr 2 was ever even mentioned, the devs announced another game called "Eternal Helix". I wonder what happened to that.

Edit: just googling was enough. Duh. Should really do that before I speak.
You're welcome, bro! Eternal Helix? I've never read or heard about it. Thanks for the tip. And I only found out about the existence of Volgarr 2 after I saw the announcement on GOG, for me, a sequel to the first would never happen given the release time, 11 years, I think.

I'm happy to help you, brother! Your laptop is new, mine is from November 2011, from a Brazilian company called Megaware, unfortunately, it no longer exists, from what I heard.

It also plays very well on keyboard + mouse, another rare thing to see in many current games, in fact, current PC games are divided into Gamepad or keyboard, and in many cases without the remapping option, a rather stupid decision.

Yeah, undead mode is basically god mode, I have nothing to complain about, nor do I care about bad endings... Lol! XD

That's the spirit! Let's burn the asses of these lizard and skull bastards! =D
