The trees have eyes.

Through the Woods, the chilling adventure of a woman looking for her son inside a terrifying forest spawned from Norwegian folktales, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 10% launch discount.

Kids assign magical properties to pretty much everything: their toys, their pets, their parents. In their impressionable minds, even a simple forest becomes an enchanted place, full of strange beasts, living trees, and cursed rocks. But what if those terrible fantasies were real? What if the forest is alive, writhing and twisting around you, making you question your sense of direction, your perception of reality and ultimately your own sanity. And somewhere among these unholy howls, these rustling noises, and the menacing shadows, your son is being kept from you, scared and alone, hoping to be rescued before he too becomes a part of the forest's dark history. Your flashlight and your wits are your only weapons. Try to keep them both about you at all times - for his sake.

Steel your nerves and fight your childhood fears as you venture on a one-way trip Through the Woods, DRM-free on GOG.com. Looking for something to keep you company? Invest in the Collector's Edition that contains the spooky soundtrack and a detailed artbook.
The 10% discount will last until November 3, 16:59 PM UTC.

IronArcturus: This game looks interesting! Has anyone tried it yet?

Tekkaman-James: I played the backer demo last year and I thought it was very good. What I experienced was a very atmospheric walking simulator. When confronted by adversaries, the only reasonable tactic was to run away, so I don't know if there will be much combat in the full game.
But you can just run away from them and go on with the story? Or is it one of those games where you have play hide and seek with the monsters, sitting tight, trying not to face them, and once you're discovered it's jumpscare and Game Over?

In the demo, there were two enemies; a creepy witch and a scary giant. Both of them will kill you if they can get close enough. The witch is definitely set up as a jump scare / instant death, but you have to trigger her. Hilariously, in both of my playthroughs, I never saw her. It wasn't until I saw a couple of Let's Plays on YouTube that I even knew she was in the game. The giant, while scary, telegraphs his approach with his booming footsteps. When he appears, you have to run away from him into a cave that he is too large to fit through. The demo ends shortly after this scene, so I cannot say if you encounter him again or if the game will require you to hide.

I really enjoy how the game's narrative is presented. The events of the game are being recalled by the player character at some future date. This presents a great mechanic for handling death. Since the character is clearly not dead, any event that ends in her death is simply a matter of her incorrectly remembering that moment, thus giving a creative reason for why you are able to restart and try again.

I hope this helps to answer your question a bit.
Looks nice, will have to wait. Crysis blew my current budget.

Thanks! It doesn't tell me precisely whether I would hate or enjoy it, but it's something to go on. :D

It looks nice, but I'll probably wait for a greater discount to be on the safe side.

I hear that. Talk about getting overshadowed on your launch day. Still, I'm more excited for this than those EA titles.
I wonder what the Norwegian voices sound like. Trailer is in English. I know what Norwegian in itself sounds like (fordi jeg skjønner norsk).

Melvinica: Will this work with norsk audio and english text ? According to the game card it seems so.
Yes, audio and text language can be set separately.
I really enjoyed the demo but when they cancelled the Linux version I cancelled my interest in buying it.

Woah, that's some lofty system requirements for an adventure game. Does it really require more horse-power than the Witcher 3 to run? Because that's what the min reqs says.

Admittedly, while they did put the Mac and Linux versions to bed for the moment, they have not ruled out the possibility of porting the game to those platforms later on. Partly due to inexperience, they ended up using programming tools that were PC-exclusive in order to up the visual fidelity of the game. It wasn't until they had built the bulk of the game that they realized it would take a Herculean effort to create separate Mac and Linux builds. Since they are a rather small team, they couldn't dedicate the time to do so while still meeting their ideal release window.

I can definitely understand being upset. If they suddenly decided to not release a DRM-Free version, I would feel equally put out. Still, they haven't closed the door on Mac and Linux versions for good. Try to stay positive!

I'm trying to, was just really looking forward to it. One thing I will say is that the developers were great to talk to on their forum. Took time to respond to questions and feedback. I have nothing but good things to say about them aside from the Linux version.
Is this essentially in the same genre as Kholat? ( Spooky, atmospheric "walking simulator", with the occasional monster or scary effect. ) Setting and atmosphere seem appealing, but it's probably fairly short and linear, so I'll wait for a better price.
The game piques my interest, but sadly, those minimum specs does not. On to the wishlist it goes...

Thanks for the information. I'll keep up the hope for a Linux port, then.
That looks like my cuppa. Too much to play at the moment, so wishlisted, but one I will almost certainly get. Unless the reviews put it in the same camp as Kholat. ~_~
