schmoemi: At least the latter is supposed to be a remake of the former, I guess...!?
Not really a remake, no. Has very little to do with the first game, other than maybe being set in the same universe and being 1000 years apart. Would be like saying Doom (2016), is a remake of Doom (1993). Although the Lords of the Fallen situation was so confusing you can find sources, claiming it to be pretty much everything. Remake, reboot, sequel, restart, reimagining, new game etc.. Pick your poison I guess.

schmoemi: But:

These haven't much in common, besides the title...
Yeah, forgot about Prey. Great example too.

Tarhiel: Instabuy, and yes, it is confusing, because this game pops up in my mind immediately :)

idbeholdME: Seems to be in fashion these days:

The new game used to have "The" in the title, but apparently it got removed and now they are named exactly the same? To keep it non-confusing I guess....

Also Hitman. You have Hitman, Hitman 2, Hitman 3, Hitman: Blood Money, Hitman: Absolution, Hitman, Hitman 2, Hitman 3.

Yes, they had subtitles, but everyone always referred to them with just the numbers. Makes it really convenient to look up info about a specific game....
I don't think this is the same sort of thing as your examples. Are this game and Inquisitor 2009 even related (beyond the obvious overlap in general setting, theme and tone, and both being products of Middle European Slavic developers) ? I see no reference to Jacek Piekara in the descriptions of the older Inquisitor, either here or on Wikipedia, but on the latter site, it mentions that game as having been "inspired by Umberto Eco's works such as The Name of the Rose." They're also from different developers and publishers, whereas both Lords of the Fallen titles are from the same publisher (who I'm pretty sure only used the name because they had the rights to it), and the Hitman game franchise has mainly (only?) had the same dev company for its entire run.
(Also, the third game in the Hitman franchise originally had no number -- it was just Hitman: Contracts. Why "3" was later added to its store pages and such, but not "4" for Blood Money, nor "5" for Absolution, I haven't the foggiest notion.)

Well, originally, I was just pointing out the sometimes honestly dumb naming practices, which happen in some cases and how confusing/inconvenient it might become to look up information about the games in the future.

Whether or not the same named games are related is a follow up, separate discussion.

I agree, this naming "convention" is confusing (similar with DOOM (1993) and DOOM (2016)), especially for newcomers.

It might not be as much for people who are into gaming and know the differences now, but it will be increasingly confusing as the time goes on.
I just hope they would be able to think about better titles.
